When the horns blared, I fell almost fell out of my bed. It didn't seem to surprised the other campers, because they woke up and stared at me.
Kallie marched into the room, looking like she owed the place. And apparently she did. Everyone seemed to know what to do except for me, who was looking around like an idiot while everyone else made their beds and got dressed in the bathroom.
Kallie smiled with appreciation at what she saw. Her red hair bobbed up and down as she moved.
"Ok listen up! Meet with your mentors for today's activities! Snow leopards go with Leah! Snakes go with Alex! Wolves go with Dylan! Lions come with me! Birds go with Sasha! Elk go with Lilly! Dolphins go with Maddie! Owls go with Luna!" She commanded.
Jenny motioned for me to come over and I smiled. I walked over and she asked "Do you want me to give you a tour?"
"Sure! And what do wolf Novas do?" I ask.
"It depends on what Dylan says. He's the wolf mentor." She replied.
"Cool! Let's go!" I exitedly said. She smiled and together we walked out of the room.
On the other side of the stairs, Dylan waited. Behind him were some Novas. I walked down the steps with Jenny and a few other girl wolf Novas in tow. Dylan did the same. He led us to a door that had a picture of a wolf. All the wolf Novas filed through the door and what I saw left me speechless.
It was a vast assortment of trees and grass. Small animals frolicked and pranced around. A stream snaked through the heart of the wolf woods. The grass was very green and alive, as well as the trees. Jenny smiled "Isn't it amazing!" She cheered. All I could do was nod.
Dylan turned towards us and winked at me. "Ok listen up! We will be doing an obstacle course. The first one to make it through the WHOLE course wins a prize!" He clapped and pointed to a clearing "That is your starting line! Meet me there!"
He turned into a wolf and bounded to the starting line. Jenny also turned into a wolf, along with three others. I did the same. We all bounded to the staring line and got ready.
"GO!" shouted Dylan. We all dashed to the first obstacle. It was a small canyon we had to jump over. I jumped with no problem and was the first one over.
Jenny was second and gaining fast. I ran faster. The next obstacle was a climbing wall. The small ledges were hard to get on but I managed to complete that obstacle.
The other wolves sprinted after me once they completed the climbing wall. Jenny pulled ahead for a split second. My heart raced. After a few more obstacles, I saw the finish line ahead. Everyone was a few feet behind.
I made myself keep running and after what seemed like forever, I heard Dylan howl. "Amber won! Congratulations!" He boomed. I panted. Everyone howled congratulations. Dylan ran into the woods and brought back a dead deer. "For Amber! She gets a deer!" He cheered. Everyone watched the deer like it was a million bucks.
I laughed. These Novas weren't that bad once you got to know them. Suddenly a dragon flew over. The dragon changed, until it was a human. It was Kallie.
"The activities are over. The wolf Novas need to meet for dinner," she said.
Dylan nodded and shouted commands at us to get us to lunch without fighting. After what seemed like forever, we all got to dinner. Each type of Nova had a separate table with a banner over the table that had a picture of your type of Nova.
I saw Leah, happily eating some meat, along with the other snow leopard Novas. Luna, was reading a book at her table. They were all reading a Harry Potter book.
The snake Nova I'd met earlier was arguing with a boy that was at her table. The dolphin Novas were talking about doing cool tricks in the water. Jenny snuck up behind me.
"Hi!" She said happily, holding two plates "I brought you some food!"
"Ah!" I yelled. All eyes turned towards me. My face turned red a little. I really wanted to yell "CHEESEBURGER!" and run away, but I didn't. Jenny cleared her throat and everyone went back to their conversations.
She sat next to me and set down my plate. She smiled and started eating. I shrugged, still a little embarrassed about what had just happened. I stared at my food until Jenny frowned.
"You don't like it?" She asked me.
"Sorry, I zoned out..." I reply. She smiles again and continues eating. I started to eat as well.
It tasted like the steak my dad would always make me. I smiled. I was actually sad when dinner was over. The Novas all went to their dorms, except for the owls. They were too busy reading.
At the girls dorm, everyone laughed and played board games like Candy Land, Chutes and ladders, and Life. I won when we played Life, and Jenny won when we played Candy Land. Even that rude snake Nova smiled and played games.
This place was now my second home. Jenny put her hand on my shoulder in a friendly, not weird way. She smiled.
"So, do you like it here?" She asked.
"Yeah!"
She chuckled. "That's great!" Her wavy hair moved back and forth every time she moved her head. After a while the games got boring and Kallie walked in.
"Get ready for bed! Lights out at 10:00!" She ordered. Everyone stood up and got out their pajamas. Two people would change in the bathroom and the rest would lpick up the board game pieces.
I finally got my chance to change in the bathroom after most people got done. Leah was arguing with the snake Nova.
"Give it back!" Leah yelled.
"No! Finders keepers! Losers weepers!" She sneered back.
"Cassie! So help me!" Leah started to say as she clenched her fist.
Cassie smirked and tossed Leah something. Leah growled at her before storming to her bed as I watched, completely confused.
Leah put the item inside the trunk that was at the foot of her bed. Cassie was whispering some things that would have gotten my mouth washed out with soap. Everyone was dead silent. Nobody dared to move or speak.
Soon, everyone was under their blankets, falling asleep as the crickets chirped outside.
