Darda P.O.V

Damn. I’m going to be late for my first day of school. My day had already begun on a downward spiral. I fell out of bed, hit my head, scared my dad, got no hot water in the shower and now I could hear the bell ringing and I still had two blocks to go to get to school. Could this day get any worse?

Splash! Please God, no! I had to ask. I just had to ask that question. Looking down at myself, I notice that my blue jeans are now brown. The car that splashed me just kept on going. Great! Not only was I late for school, I was now dirty on the morning of my first day of a new school year. What did I do to deserve this? What were these harsh acts of karma for?

The squeal of tires caught my attention as a dark blue Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4 Super Trofeo Stradale came to a halt not 25 feet from me. OH. MY. GOD! That was the new mantra reverberating I my mind. My second love was cars. The first being motorcycles. My dad taught me everything he knows and he was good.

“Oh good Lord! I’m so sorry! Uugh! I told you not to sped. You can’t be late twice, you know. Now just look what you’ve done. She’s all wet. What if she catches a cold. Did you think of that!”

“Uh, come on  Sherri, it was…”

“Don’t you dare! I will deal with you later. Might even make you walk for a while… Look what you’ve done. She’s in shock!”

Oh Lord. I looked up to see a ball of compressed fury heading straight towards me with a Greek god hustling behind her trying to get a word in edgewise. I began to laugh. Really laugh. One of those gut – wrenching, belly – busting, makes you cry so hard you’re weak laughs. That stopped the little tornado in her tracks.

“Well, you are right about one thing though, you can’t be late twice. Hi, I’m Dara Chanez.” I extended my hand to the little tornado as she broke a smile that could melt steel.

“Hi girl. I’m Sherri Connelly and this handsome idiot is my m… sweetheart, Devary Murray. We’re so sorry about the… uh, well…”   She looked around at the road and then at me and gave me another apologetic smile.

“Yeah, I’m really sorry. Can I give you a ride home so you can change?" Devary murmured looking sheepishly at Sherri. They looked like an amazing couple and it seems Devary wanted to get back in Sherri’s good graces.

“That’s all right. I live just three blocks away. I’ll just walk.” Although they were really nice I wasn’t ready to just hop into a car with strangers. They say the devil looks like an angel and didn’t I know it.

“Absolutely not! We are partially responsible for you being late, so we’ll give you a ride home and wait for you while you change and we’ll all go to school together. You’re new so this way you wouldn’t get into any trouble.”

As I found myself seated in the car, I marveled at Sherri. She was maybe five feet tall with red – gold curly hair that hung down her back to about her waist. At five feet 8 inches, I felt abnormally tall over her. I had silver - blonde hair that was straight – no matter how much you curled it – that reached just below my butt. I loved my hair and hadn’t cut it since I was seven.

“Ah, Dara? Where to?” Devary asked.

“138 Sevenson Street,” I replied. I heard them both inhale sharply. I turned to face Sherri who looked like she had just been told her mom died and asked the most obvious question…

“What?”

“You don’t know about the old Gonzales place?” Devary asked.

“It used to belong to my great – grandparents on my mother’s side. What about it?” Both Sherri and Devary turned to look at me in shock.

“Your great – grandparents? Collis and Margaret Gonzales were your great – grandparents?” Sherri almost screamed.

“Uh huh,” I replied puzzled as Devary recovered enough to keep the car on his side of the road. Sherri and Devary exchanged a load glance as I wondered how the hell they knew anything about my great – grandparents and better yet, what do they know about me.
