Background: Originally, this poem was only an assignment for English class. Our prompt was taking a stand, and while most of my class wrote about historical figures, this idea of a poem came to my mind. To me, this poem describes the feelings of having your ideas repeatably beat down by others, and how much the sense of accomplishment hits you when you've finally reached the top. I wrote this entire poem in thirty minutes, but the direction it took startled me. I hope this poem can give you a sense of motivation to take on a new fear or task you've been afraid to tackle.
LIGHTNING STRIKE
It begins with an idea.
a purpose...
an injustice...
a design of your own creation.
and like wood in a fire, it burns
and burns...
until you cannot stand on the sidelines
and watch those flames consume
the world you know...
and love...
a flash of lightning,
a boom of thunder,
a plan is formed
it seems like you're
unstoppable...
undebatable...
you're the water to the wildfire.
but water isn't always enough,
but sometimes,
it's
Too
MUCH
and you're drowning...
and burning...
all at once...
while the worries...
and words
cling to your back,
like a vine on a tree
that just
won't
let
go.
But the rain will come
and the fire will die.
and you'll rise like a balloon in the sky.
from underneath the walls
and walls
of bricks
stacked
on
top
of
you
then you'll float above the stormy clouds,
the lightning will strike,
the fire will come
again
and again
but you'll have already reached the top ready to fight back.

Note: I wrote this poem going from bottom to top on a regular sheet of paper, so when it states, "reached the top," the words have physically reached the top of the page.
