The test

(Reynie's POV)

I sat behind a girl with long dark hair. I could only see the back of her head, and considering what she was wearing, she wasn't like any of the other kids. She wore a braided flower crown around her head and wore a plain striped shirt with black skinny jeans. Her shoes were plain white converse that had some doodlings on the sides of it. Hmm, interesting choice of fashion. Her long dark hair was braided to the side and her posture was nothing at all like the kids around me. She was calm, cool and collected. A woman wearing all yellow showed up. She had red hair and handed out the papers.

"You will have one hour. You may begin." she said.

"Given the speed of the two trains and the distance between them, how long will it take for the two trains to collide?"

Thirty-seven minutes, four seconds. But given the standardization of railroad timekeeping and teh modernization of both warning and braking systems, hopefully, enough safeguards are in place to avoid a crash althogether.

"An elephant and a llama are falling to their deaths from a great height. You can only save one. Which?"

I'd save the elephant, in hopes that it could break the llama's fall.

"True or false? I'm usually right. Most of my friends are imaginary. I don't generally feel empty inside. Real change is impossible. Fish are unnerving."

True.

"Do you watch television?"

Not really.

"Are you brave?"

I would like to think so.

I saw the clock above my head and saw that the time was almost up. I quickly finished the last problem and dropped my pencil, before the instructor told us to drop them.

"PENCILS!" I heard the instructor said. Everyone groaned, and the girl in front of me was as calm as always. We handed her our papers and she checked over all the papers and was left with two of them.

"I shall now read the names of the children admitted to the second phase of the test. If your name is called, report to the Monk Building on Third Street no later than one o'clock. You will bring one and only one pencil as well as an eraser. Any more or less will be disqualified, which would be a gift, considering the academic brutality of the next exam." the instructor said. I raised my hand. All of the heads turned towards me, including the girl infront of me. She had the most beautiful grey eyes I have ever seen.

"Will there be a sharpener?" I asked.

"Yes. If a sharpener should become necessary, one will be provided. I shall now read the list." the instructor replied. She cleared her throat and was ready to read the ever so long list.

"Reynard Muldoon and Althea Kingsley." she said, leaving.

"Wait, what?" One kid asked.

"That's it?" another kid said.

"My mom's gonna be so mad!" another kid said. They all piled out except for the girl infront of me. She turned around and faced me.

"Hey, I'm Reynie. What's your name?" I asked, her piercing grey eyes staring into my soul. Oh, how stupid I was! The instructor literally just said her name. How could you make a careless mistake Reynie?

"I'm Althea, but I go by Thea (anyone read Thea Stilton when they were younger? No, just me? Alright... *goes and starts crying in a corner.) You got anything to eat, I'm starving." she said.
