Goodbye

"Tell me I'm wrong!" Dream snapped, glaring at the brunette in front of him. "Say it! Tell me what I saw was wrong and I'm just overthinking everything again." At this point, the other's silence was enough of an answer. Wilbur was never this quiet normally, only when something bad happened.

The one in question didn't say anything and just kept his head down. Dream swallowed hard, holding back the tears that so desperately wanted to fall. There were so many emotions running around Dream's chest, all fighting for attention while his throat burned and tightened.

"Wilbur, please." Dream almost begged, his voice so close to cracking. "Just, please, say I'm wrong. Say all of this is wrong and it was all fake."

"I can't... This is the one thing I can't lie about." Those words hit Dream with such a brute force he took one step back and hugged himself tightly. The emotions from earlier almost all vanished, leaving Dream with the numbing feeling of getting his trust broken once again. Wilbur finally looked up, his normally bright eyes that always made Dream think of warm coffee on a cold morning now resembled how dirt looked after rain, puddles of mud that took too much and couldn't give back. "I'm sorry, Dream. I didn't mean-"

"You didn't mean to?!" Dream felt the shock of everything quickly melt into a pool of anger. "You didn't mean to cheat? It's a choice, Wilbur! You can't accidentally cheat on someone. Cheating is a choice, one that you made!"

"I was drunk!" Wilbur tried to argue, but he didn't sound like he believed in his argument. "Last thing I was told, you never wanted to see me again! I thought I had lost you and I didn't know what else to do!"

That struck a different cord but Dream couldn't focus on that right now. "Not sleep with another person, that seems like a good idea. If there was any chance of things working out, it's gone now! You took that chance and burned it to ashes the moment you agreed to go back to that girl's apartment!"

What Dream was saying seemed to click into Wilbur's brain as his eyes widened while so many emotions flooded into them that they were unreadable. "No, Dream, please no. We can- we can fix this. There's always a way to fix things." Wilbur held his hands up slightly, not knowing what to do with them and his eyes glossed over with tears.

"Not this..." Dream whispered, so close to letting his tears spill over and giving in to the need of just curling into a ball and crying his eyes dry. "This isn't something fixable. I... I think I need to go."

"No, no no no. Dream, please." Wilbur grabbed Dream's hands, desperation the only clear thing in his eyes. His grip wasn't tight, it was so loose that Dream could easily take his hands back. But he didn't want to, not yet. "I'll- I'll do anything, just please. Don't go. I can make it up to you, I promise." Dream squeezed his eyes shut as he gently pulled his hands away.

And Wilbur let him go.

Dream's voice cracked as he shook his head, "That won't help, Wil. I can't trust you anymore. Not after this." He turned and took a few steps away from the brunette, away from the man that fixed his heart before shattering it to pieces once again.

But he was stopped when Wilbur turned him around, arms going tightly around Dream's waist while he was kneeling down. "I know I mess-messed up, but don't leave. Please, don't leave. I-I can't lose you. I know I hurt you but I want to tr-try to make it up to you. Any-anything you want, I'll do. Just...please.." Wilbur cried into Dream's hoodie, hold loosening with every sentence.

Dream had never seen Wilbur like this. So weak and scared to the point of begging Dream to stay. It broke Dream's heart as he whispered, "Then let me leave."

Wilbur's hold tightened for just a second before his arms fell and he leaned back on his legs, looking up at Dream with a tear-stained face and eyes that held all the riches in the Earth but still looked so empty with defeat. "I'm sorry..."

As the first tear fell, Dream gently cupped Wilbur's cheek. "I know. But I think it'd be better if I leave." Wilbur just nodded, knowing Dream was right but leaned into his touch anyways. "Goodbye, Wilbur."

Never getting a reply, Dream walked out of the apartment, both of them knowing it was truly over. The best thing that happened for both of them was over, broken into a million pieces before being burned to the point of sizzling ashes and soot. That 'goodbye' was final. It always was when Dream said it. There was only one other time Dream had told someone that, but he never thought he'd say it with Wilbur on the receiving end.

They always talked about it, seeming like they were meant to be with one another, side by side for the rest of time. But, as it seems, it was never meant to be.

The pair laughed as they sat atop the hill, overlooking the small town they called home. Wilbur watched as Dream managed to stop himself from sounding like a tea kettle while leaning his head back on the tree, some of his dirty blond hair falling in front of his face.

"I want to marry you," Wilbur spoke without thinking.

This got Dream to turn his head over to the brunette, eyes holding the tops of a rich and lush forest with a look Wilbur had seen so many times that danced around the treetops. "Oh yeah? Think I'd make good husband material?"

"Probably not," Wilbur confessed, which got Dream to slap his arm. "But I don't think I'd be any good either, so we'll fuck things up together."

"I mean, we already do that, don't we?" Dream asked as he grabbed Wilbur's hand and intertwined their fingers. "You were supposed to marry some daughter of a rich person's company for legal reasons and I was supposed to take over my father's business. Look where we are now."

Wilbur looked out across the valley they lived in, the sun setting above the mountains and giving the sky a new coat of colors. People bustled around while kids zipped from place to place, chasing after each other. Compared to the city they both grew up in, this was a much better place.

"I don't see anything wrong here. Other than not being married to you yet." Dream laughed again, a genuine smile appearing across his face.

"You're not letting that go, are you?"

"You haven't said no."

"Why would I when I'm saying yes?"

Maybe, in a different place, a different world with different lives but the same people, it could have worked.
