I wake up to thin air and it's cold. I wear dark jeans and a blue tank top. I push myself up to a sitting position. I'm sitting in a very large field and about three inches of snow beneath me. I look all around me and all that I can just barely see is forest wrapped around every side behind a wall of fog. Only a small amount of sun shines through all the dark gray clouds.
I pull my about shoulder length brown hair back into a ponytail, a few short pieces hanging loose in front of my face. I look all around me again, not exactly knowing where I am. The only recent memories I have are the sound of propellers, which could only mean that they-whoever they are- sent me here in a helicopter. That is the only recent memory I have, but I do remember only a few things from when I was younger, like school, not any of the faces, but learning. I also remember my family, well, mostly my twin sister. Her name is Rowan, she kind of looks like me, but I can remember only a few times that anybody mixed us up.
I obviously know who I am. At least my name, age, and what I look like. My name is Renee. I'm sixteen years old and I think I was born around autumn time. I'm tall, thin, and have slightly tanned skin.
One thought keeps coming to my mind and makes me start to panic. Where is Rowan? If they put me here wouldn't they have sent her too? If she's here I will find her, no doubt.
I push the thought away knowing it won't help. I stand up and my legs suddenly feel sore as if they're begging me to to sit down once again. I will not give up and stay where I started. I can't stay here, I need to find someone. I run... not to an exact place, just run. I feel something tug at my gut. As if a burning rope is tugging me to the ground now instead of my sore legs. I take a glance down, but no rope is really there. I still run no matter how much it hurts and burns my skin.
I sprint even faster, faster than I ever have before. Somehow I feel like if I run it will go away. The rope never stops tugging at me, though. I never stop running. Pain wants me to give up, but the pain only makes me stronger.
The invisible rope takes a huge tug at my waist. I wince and almost trip over a big rock, I jump over it just in time. I take a few unsteady steps but soon re-gain my balance and keep running.
I grunt, my stomach feels close to numb and burns like hell. I'm getting closer and closer to the forest just up ahead. Every step brings me closer to something, anything. Even closer and I see a figure standing at the edge of the forest. Even closer and I see that it's a girl.
So close to the forest and I realize who it is. Rowan. I can tell that it's her just by her bluish-gray eyes just like mine, freckles spotting her nose, and her long auburn hair. My sister. She's here and so am I. The second I find out who sent her here, I will kill them. Go ahead and put me here, put me through whatever comes next, but not her, she doesn't deserve it. I do.
I'm just a few yards away from her. Something cool and hard smacks straight into my face. I look closely and I see that it's a large almost completely transparent wall separating us. The invisible rope still doesn't stop tugging at me. I try to shove it off, but I can't because it's not really there. I scream and pound my fist on the see through wall. It doesn't budge.
"Rowan!" I yell at the top of my lungs. I sure hope she remembers me. She has to, right? She doesn't say anything, but has a sad look on her face. Each time that my fist connects with the wall the invisible rope tugs harder at my stomach. I scream again it's so loud and high pitched that it hurts my own ears.
The rope tugs once more and the pain is so unbearable that I fall over and my head slams into the ground. I feel nauseated and dizzy, a loud ringing in my ears.
I can't build up enough strength to stand up again. The rope never stops tugging and burning. I toss and turn, but that only makes it worse. The pain makes me scream several times. I can't feel my stomach anymore, it's completely numb and burns like fire all over at once. The edges of my eyes start to turn black, am I dying? Is this what dying feels like? If I'm dying then why isn't Rowan trying to help me?
The pain continues for I don't know how long and screams escape from me. The rope still tugs and burns skin all the way down to my legs. Rowan doesn't try to help me at all the whole time. I don't exactly expect her to. After all, there is a gigantic nearly transparent wall separating us.
My heart rate never slows and I'm completely out of breath. My eyes start to feel heavy heavy and droop down. The dying thought comes to my mind again. Is this really what death actually feels like? Am I ready to die? Is it my time to die?
No. I will never stop fighting until I can't fight any longer. I will not die today. No matter what it takes to keep fighting and survive, I'll do it. I take one last shaky breath, then my eyes close completely, no pain, and everything goes pitch black. But I know I'm not dead. Because the only thing that I can hear, are my breaths.
