I trudged to Meagan's office around 3:45. I ended up leaving school early after the run-in with Makenna. My mom was always my safe-haven. She was my go-to advice giver, but with her gone, Meagan was my second choice. I opened the door and pulled off my hoodie.

"You're early, as usual. How was school?" Meagan asked when I sat down in her office.

"Oh it was fine. I just left during my free block. I got permission first." I explained.

"That's good. Listen I know you're not big on gifts, but I got you something." She said handing me a purple bag with a bow and card attached. I opened the envelope to the card first and saw a hundred dollar bill inside. The note said something about being eighteen. I went to open the bag and the first thing I saw was a journal.

"It's not to replace the one from your mom, but I noticed it was getting filled up when you were flipping through it the other night. If you don't like it I completely understand, so the receipt is at the bottom. You may return it and pick something else out if you want."

"Meagan its perfect, thank you. I was going to ask for a new one from dad anyways." I said sliding the money into the journal and placing it back into the purple bag.

"Oh good, I was worried for a second. Now how about we head out and go meet those neighbors?" She asked and I stood up following her outside. We climbed into her car and started the short drive home.

When we got home, we walked over to the new neighbors house. I noticed a lot of boxes mark with KS on it. I wondered what that stood for.

"Oh my! I am so sorry, I didn't see you there." A woman smiled.

"Oh no worries. I'm Meagan, and this is my husband's daughter, Freya. We just noticed you moved in next door and wanted to see if you needed help unpacking?" Meagan began.

"Oh that would be great! We're moving my niece in this week. She's had a rough month, and we thought it was time for a change. Would you mind following me upstairs with those boxes?" She asked and pointed to a stack, which I grabbed.

"Of course, We understand how rough patches can affect people." Meagan said following behind. I knew she meant me. I basically made it hard for my dad to deal with the huge change of seeing me everyday.

"Well my name is Jamie Shultz. Everyone calls me Jay." Shultz sounded familiar, but I had blocked out most of my day. That was until I saw the pink haired girl from my class.

"Oh hey Freya! We must be neighbors! That's sick!" She smiled when she saw me.

"Oh you two know each other?" Meagan asked me.

"We have classes together." I shrugged. The two women moved downstairs leaving Kirsten and I alone in her room.

"Hey so about earlier, are you okay?" Kirsten asked.

"I'm fine. Makenna just picks on me for stuff."

"Like losing your mother?"

"Oh uh yeah..." I trailed off.

"Sorry didn't mean to upset you, I ended up asking around as I was confused about it."

"Yeah I understand that, I'd be curious too. She uh passed four years ago today...." I didn't know why I was telling her this.

"Brutal. I'm so sorry you have to deal with that." She sighed.

"It's alright. I'm getting through it I guess."

"It doesn't make it easier..."

"I know." I decided to change the subject.

"So, you're from California?" I asked.

"Oh yes I am! I already miss it so much." She perked up.

"What's it like over there?" I asked.

"It's a blast! There's always something to do in California! Like beach trips, spa days, shopping, you name it." She ranted.

"Sounds fun." I smiled.

"It's my happy place to be honest." She huffed taking a seat on an unmade bed. I took a seat next to her as she padded the open spot.

"I've never gotten to travel before. My mother never could afford it, and well my dad isn't much of a traveler." I said.

"Yeah its expensive. Jamie has been my travel buddy since diapers. I remember we once went to Florida for a weekend just so I could witness Disney World." She explained.

"That's so cool!" I smiled.

"Hey so, I'm assuming you don't talk to a lot of people, but I'd really like to be friends?" Kirsten asked.

"Yeah of course. I've never really had friends before, so sorry if I came off rude." I sighed.

"No worries!" Meagan came back upstairs shortly after our conversation ended.

"It was nice meeting you Kirsten, but we have to go. Freya's dad is taking us out for her birthday."

"I thought we were cooking?" I asked.

"Wait it's your birthday?" Kirsten asked.

"Oh uh yeah."

"Happy birthday! Major bummer it being the same day of your mother's passing, I am so sorry. See you tomorrow?" I was a bit shocked she said that, but I knew she meant well, so I let it go.

"Yeah see you tomorrow..." I said and followed Meagan out of the house with my new friend inside.
