"Done" the boy shouted whilst simultaneously slamming his book shut and running to the back garden. The mother sighed as she cleared up all of the schoolwork off the table before starting on dinner. The family lived in a weathered semi- detached house in the suburban parts of Everton. They were isolated. The closest neighbour was 5 miles away. The boy, who was aged 8, had long brown hair, bright green eyes and a small button like nose. THE BOYS NAME WAS...

"RODGER, get inside! Your dinner is ready!" the mother bellowed towards the back garden. The paltry dinner was just two beans and a singular ration of bacon. He was so malnourished you could see his ribs but it would appear that no-one ever cared. Rodger was home-schooled, he had no true friends.

At the back of the house there was a massive play area. It was non-functional as when the mother had made it she'd made it all wrong. Smashed beer bottles and random nails covered the vast amount of space. The air was polluted with the stench of death. In the distance was a massive woodland which contained a lake where the mother went fishing but there was no fish to be caught.

"Hurry up and eat your dinner" snapped the mother, Rodger tried to scoff down his dinner as fast as humanly possible. She looked Rodger up and down and snarled, "What are you doing you fat pig , always scoffing down your dinner like that?" Rodger did not reply and stopped eating. He was being subservient, otherwise his mother would have blown into a violent rage. He questioned his mother on where his father was but silence fell upon the room as the mother continued to eat.

"GET TO YOUR ROOM NOW!" the mother bellowed. Rodger obeyed as he was worried what might occur if he didn't. Huddled up underneath his blanket, Rodger wondered what life would be like if his mother and father were still together and happy and if he and his twin brother weren't separated. A thought that Rodger had often found himself thinking "If only my life was like the ones I read about in my books". When the family had first moved in there was a massive pile of books from all different genres. The evil mother wanted to use them all to make a massive fire; however the two young boys had taken a few books and hid them.

Rodger heard his mum arriving at his room and pretended to be asleep. The mother swung open the door and charged in and saw Rodger asleep and snarled "good." Rodger then heard his mother slowly stumble down the corridor to the living room where she finished the bottle of wine that she had started with dinner. Rodger snuck out of his bed, slowly propped open the window, grabbed his favourite book and crept out. Rodger sat on the swing and started to read outload. Every paragraph he looked up to the sky and stared hopingly at one star. He believed this star to be his brother that had mysteriously gone missing after just a month of them living in the house. "Oh, I like this chapter!" exclaimed a mysterious voice from behind Rodger .

Rodger turned around and saw a figure standing there looming over him. This strange person had short spiky brown hair and fair skin. He had the same clothes on which he went missing but they seemed to be watered down. The colour appeared to be faded as though they had been submerged in a bleach solution. His lips were a pale blue as though he drew his last breath long ago. His eyes seemed like he had been crying, however no tears were ever drawn.
