Yeah, of course it had occurred to me that I may have made the most ridiculous decision in the world by coming with the man.
No, I didn't regret it.There was no way that he was lying about being some kind of 'Time Lord' or whatever. The police box had been proof he wasn't human. He was some kind of magical figure, some kind I haven't heard of. I wondered if even Annabeth knew.
But, I still didn't trust the guy. It wasn't that I didn't believe him, or that I saw him as a threat. It was the fact that I, admittedly, didn't trust people. I knew I was quick to like or hate someone, but trusting wasn't something I did easily. Not anymore. Not after Bianca.
Of course, that didn't mean I hadn't jumped at the opportunity to go back to my childhood. It was really strange to think about the fact it had been almost eighty years ago, yet I was just a fourteen year old boy. Time was strange, and he was only making it seem even stranger. Maybe it has been my inner 10-year-old speaking, but I really wanted to see how this thing worked.
"So, I know after seeing the size of this that this whole TARDIS thing is real and you're probably not just on drugs or anything, but what I don't know is how it works. How?" I asked. "This isn't realistic at all. And trust me, I've had my share on unrealistic things."
"Nothing's realistic, if you think about it. You're a piece of flesh with calcium sticks in and a brain, yet you manage to do things like walk and talk," the brown-haired man answered.
"What?" was all I could manage with a raised eyebrow. I had to stop myself from laughing.
"Never mind. It's just some wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey stuff," he answered.
"I take back the thing I said about you not being on drugs."
Instead of responding, he pulled a few levers from some complex machine thing in the center of the box. I had absolutely no idea what they did, but I was pretty sure it wouldn't be long before I found out.
"We're here," he said, brushing the hair out of his face.
I couldn't tell whether or not he was serious.
"Come on, go have a look outside," he winked.
Half of my was afraid I would die after opening the door, while the other half was overcome with excitement. I tried forgetting the afraid part, and opened up the door.
I wasn't sure what to say. It really was the 1940's. I remembered it like it was yesterday. All the outfit's people wore seemed ridiculous now, but at the same time, they seemed like history, like artifacts. And by this time, they were. Women wearing short, colorful dresses and fancy hats, men wearing fancier clothing and button-ups. Even their hairstyles were different. Most of the women had much more elaborate hair that made Piper's hair look like a birds nest.
"This...This is amazing." I knew I was probably standing and staring at the doorway for way too long, but I probably could have stayed that way for years. It was all history, yet here it was, right in front of my eyes.
But the only depressing thought I had was the feeling they all gave me. Almost all of them were dead, and my head was spinning just from the thought of it. They all had a death aura. I felt as though I were in the underworld again, but I tried to push the thought away.
"Are you going to just stand at the door or do you really want to see the city?" he asked with a grin.
I didn't hesitate to walk out. It seemed like a dream, though it was very much real.
"June, 1947, Washington D.C. Haven't been her many times before," The Doctor said, observing everything.
"Everyone looks so happy," I said, not particularly talking to him so much as I was to myself. "I mean, the war just ended, if I'm not mistaken, and they're all just happy. I've been through war, and I don't know how they're still like this."
He grinned at me. "So've I. But I think sometimes, it's better to think about the fact they got through it, rather than regret that it happened. Life's a lot better when you think about the upsides."
