The afterlife was different from how I imagined it. Actually, that was an inaccurate assessment since I never seriously imagined the afterlife. I was never a spiritual kind of guy and I was more grounded in reality despite being an avid visual novel enjoyer.
All around me were stars as I floated in space. A comet flew overhead and in the distance, cosmic dust formed clouds. However, I wasn't alone in this strange place.
A person with long white hair was looking at me. They were wearing a white outfit and triangle-shaped objects floated around them.
Normally, I would assume that they were a girl but times were changing. The last thing I needed was to get canceled in afterlife Twitter just because I assumed someone's gender.
"So? Who are you supposed to be? Are you going to be my companion in the afterlife?" I asked.
There was no need to worry about choices with their own pros and cons. I was already dead. What was the worst that could happen to me if I spoke without restraints?
A door appeared behind me and I got confused. Was I supposed to enter it? Where was I supposed to go now that I was dead? Was it going to lead me to Heaven? Who was I kidding? It would be more appropriate if I were going to Hell.
"You will not die as long as you bear witness", the white-haired person said.
Before I could ask what they meant by that, the door opened and sucked me in. Darkness consumed me as pain coursed through my body.
My eyes opened and I saw the ceiling. I could feel sweat on my face and the slight sting I could feel on my chest made me think that I was somehow alive.
I looked at the room and it was a regular hospital room. And after a second of wondering how I ended up here, I remembered what happened.
Mori-san cut me down with her scythe and I was bleeding on the ground. The rest after that was a complete blank. I was sure I was supposed to die back then so how in the world did I end up in a hospital?
The door opened and a black-haired woman entered. Her eyes widened when she saw me awake and she rushed over to give me a hug.
"Taku! You're awake!" she hugged.
"Yeah. I'm still alive, mom", I replied.
Her name was Sakamoto Yukino, my mother. She was just an average housewife whose husband was working overseas. While she might not be perfect, she did her best in raising me on her own and I became someone who I was right now.
"When I received a call that a thief attacked you in school, I was worried", she said.
"Thief?" I asked.
"When the Distortion alarm rang, one student went to the clinic to make sure that there were no sick students left behind. She was surprised to find you bleeding like that so she did first aid and got you to the hospital."
A thief? Was that what really happened back then?
Someone else entered the room and it was a girl with brown hair. She was wearing round glasses and our school's uniform. And since I didn't recognize her despite being in the same year as me, she was probably from another class.
"Ah. Let me introduce you. This girl was the one who found you, Sato Roboco", mom told me.
"Hello, Sakamoto-kun. Feel free to call me Roboco", she smiled.
Mom's phone vibrated and when she took it out, her eyes widened.
"There's a flash sale for meat! I gotta get this one! Take care, Taku", she ran off and left me alone with Roboco-san.
