Sebek had arrived far later than he would've liked, he had to beg the Headmage for permission to leave and then get Malleus' permission. Then he had to ask a friend to pick up all his remaining schoolwork and take notes for him, then he had to find a way to get to where you were. All in all, it took far longer than he had planned, that and the fact that he didn't even read your note till lunch had left him with a very small window of time. This didn't discourage the young man though, rather it motivated him further as he rushed to get to you.
Sadly, by the time he had finally reached where you were staying, it was approaching dinner time. From what he could see, you were sitting in your room, eating a typical hospital dinner. He couldn't tell if you had undergone the surgery or not yet, but he was terrified of approaching you either way. Tears welling up in his eyes as he thought of all the pain he was putting you through without even realizing. How could you ever forgive him?
A nurse must have noticed him standing there and become concerned as she approached him softly, inquiring if he was ok or needed any help.
"Ah, could you tell me if that person there," he motioned to where you were sat in your room, "has undergone the hanahaki surgery yet? It's a friend of mine and I didn't want to interrupt their dinner time with questions." Sebek wasn't one to lie, so he instead told the truth, but from a different point of view.
"Oh! They actually went into surgery a few hours ago! Luckily we caught their case just in time, a day later and they likely wouldn't have made it. They have a high chance of making a full recovery though so there's no need to worry!" The cheery tone the nurse spoke in did little to console him as her words had his heart dropping. Almost as if he had run into a brick wall, it felt like his world had come to a complete halt.
He couldn't face you now, not when you had already undergone surgery and had been on the brink of death. The tears that had been previously resting in his eyes had begun to fall, sliding down his face in a cascade of pain and sorrow. Perhaps he was better off returning to the school and waiting for you to return. Maybe then he could bring himself to stand in your presence without his heart aching and his thoughts running a muck.
A sudden rush of doctors and sounds of distress had dragged Sebek from the depths of his mind. With a look in your direction, he saw you, staring at him as you coughed and choked on what he had hoped was only your dinner. He knew that it wasn't right though, not with the way blood dripped from the corner of your mouth, staining the bedsheets below. Not with the pained, longing expression tucked into your eyes.
In a blink Sebek found himself at your bedside, having moved on instinct to protect the one he loved. He held your hand and told you how sorry he was and how he really did love you, pressing kisses to your knuckles as he watched you cough tirelessly.
A moment or perhaps two had passed before you finally were able to spit up what had been causing you so much grief. A small cluster of seeds, springing up tiny sprouts. The doctors had missed them, and seeing Sebek standing across the hall, sobbing as he stared at you, had triggered them into life. Though rather than root themselves into the walls of your lungs, your body had forced you into coughing them up, expelling the last lingering bits of your disease. If it hadn't been for Sebek they wouldn't have sprouted, but they also would have sat there, forever unbloomed, lying in wait, dormant as you fell tirelessly into love again. But you wouldn't fall in love, not again at least, for your love for Sebek had never dulled. Seeing him here right now, and soaking up every sweet word, every delicate kiss, it sent a warm, fluttery feeling rippling through you.
"Sebek?" Your voice came out closer to a croak than its normal sound, your throat hoarse from the difficulty you just faced.
"Shh, it's ok. Just drink this and rest for a moment. I'm not going anywhere, I promise." He handed you the drink that had been served with your dinner, hesitating for a moment before letting go of your hand, shifting his hand to your shoulder instead so that you could focus on your drink. As you sipped at the drink, swallowing slowly so as to not further irritate yourself, Sebek went into detail about how he had read your letter later than he should've, how he immediately sprang into action to get himself dismissed for the day, how he spent ten minutes roaming the hospital lost, all until he got to where you currently were now.
"Again, I'm so sorry. I should've never let things escalate like this and I would never willingly put your life at risk like that. I hope that one day you could find it within yourself to forgive me, I don't expect you to feel anything for me after all that you endured."
"I forgive you." The first words you had spoken since Sebek had started talking. As cute as you found his voice, you really didn't want him to get into a self-loathing rant about everything he 'did wrong.'
"I could never say mad at you, especially not when you came all this way just to see me." You gave him a small smile, nearly tearing up when you saw his own falling.
"You are far too forgiving, I can't help but feel I am undeserving of your forgiveness."
"Well whether you feel deserving or not, I forgive you. I also still love you." Sebek's tears fell at a much faster rate, his emotions overflowing and consuming him whole.
"I love you too."
