A glimmering silver dress lay patiently on my bed, laid out in such a way that crinkles in the fabric were absent. Humming, I tugged the black vest I was wearing over my head, chucking it carelessly to the other side of the bed, pulling down my jeans and doing the same with them.

The dress was cold, draping heavily over my figure as I adjusted the positions of the straps in my mirror, grinning as I was finally satisfied. The chest and waist portion of the outfit was fairly tight, hugging me close enough to almost be classed as uncomfortable - whereas the bottom flowed out, cloaking down to slightly below my knees. There were no sleeves, but we'd be inside for most of tonight, so I saw no need in ruining the look with a chunky coat from my wardrobe.

The clock across the room read 7:15; meaning I still had a good twenty minutes before I should be setting off for the party. With practised swiftness, I pinned my hair up to allow the strands to flow down whilst still looking somewhat fancy.

Ping!

“Ten guesses who that is,” I muttered teasingly, seeing Alex’s contact flare up on my home screen, phone having been tossed with my jeans onto the bed. Plucking the device from the pocket, I plopped down onto the mattress, bracing my back against the wall and bringing up my friend’s text.

‘On a scale of one to ten, how badly will Kirsten torture me for being late?’

‘Ten.’

Alex was a close friend; having met him a couple of years ago and instantly hitting it off with the guy. He was sweet, but I genuinely couldn’t remember a time he’d ever actually showed up on time for anything. That being the reason why whenever we met up, we’d have to account for an extra half an hour of dawdling before he actually arrived.

For Jake’s birthday he’d pulled up a fashionable two hours late; so I’d be lying if I said I was surprised that Alex would give Kirsten the same treatment for hers.

‘How far out are you?’

‘I’m still waiting on Cai, he said he was nearly ready like half an hour ago :p And then it's an hours drive to Kirsten’s place’

“Seriously, Cai…” I murmured under my breath tapping back a response:

‘Give your brother a wack upside the head and tell him to put his foot on the pedal if you don’t want to leave the party in a coffin tomorrow ><’

Barely a few seconds passed before Alex got back to me.

‘Aight, give me a sec’

Sighing as my gaze flicked from the light grey of my wall to a silly game I had downloaded to pass the time, I waited fruitlessly for an update on Alex’s situation. Even his replies were late, it seemed.

7:48 glared at me as I pulled down my notification wall, and I leapt to my feet, sliding the dainty matching shoes on in distaste. The darkening sky dimmed my room, turning the plain walls and white ceiling to a dull hue.

In a bag slung over my shoulder sat a swimsuit, PJs, trainers, and a fresh shirt and leggings alongside other necessities. Throwing my phone and charger in amongst the chaos, I zipped it up and prepared to leave.

It would be a huge understatement to say that Kirsten’s parents are rich - and with their wealth came a giant sized backyard pool just begging to be used. The plan was partying today, swimming tonight, and heading out to wreak havoc in town tomorrow. Luckily Kirsten’s parents didn’t mind the little parties she enjoyed throwing - not that they’re around long enough to notice.

The two had apparantly stayed long enough this morning to throw a small celebration for her and give her a few gifts, before scampering off for another few weeks. They were lovely people, kinder than you’d expect; but busy caring for some relatives up north on top of their workload. They’d left Kristen alone here once she was old enough to get by fine, leaving her with a constantly supply of money and well wishes. Apparantly the two of them had wanted Kristen to stay here for school, as well as for the social life she’d quickly built up.

Footsteps thudding against the boards of my stairs, I jogged on out the door after grabbing a few snacks from the kitchen and double checking I had my keys and present for the birthday girl.

Slamming the door behind me, a slight skip to my step led me onwards down the road, absent of wanderers even this early on at night.

The moon stood proudly above, a beautifully mystic sight that accompanied me on my journey. I didn’t bother running; I’d only be a few minutes late at most, nothing noteworthy when compared to Alex or Vince.

The breeze stroked my skin, giving rise to goosebumps despite not really feeling the cold. A muffled ping, the noise mostly absorbed by the pile of clothes suffocating my phone rang out. Raising a brow, I decided to wait until I got to the party to respond to Alex.

“The streets are quiet tonight.”

Weakly illuminating streets lights were my only company down the few streets leading to my location - the quarter of an hour trek made all the more enjoyable in the solitude.

Well, solitude would be somewhat of a lie. I was just under ten minutes away from Kirsten’s house  - correction, Kirsten’s mansion - when the gradually increasing thump of music met my ears. Ten guesses as to which house that is.

Pulling out my keys, I flicked through them carelessly, plucking out two gleaming brass keys sat side by side, each covered by a slightly stained yellow cover at the top, where the keychain looped through. If the music was this loud at this distance, then god help anyone trying to hear my knocks over the blast of the tunes.

'MC!' A deep voice jolted my gaze upwards, and stood by the door to the metaphorical castle of white and yellow paint was someone I instantly recognised.

Clad in a gorgeous golden dress adorned with intricate black swirls and patterns, her sandy blonde hair pinned up with shimmering jewelry, and her dark eyes brightening as she grinned.

"Took you long enough!"
