Estes is undecided about her reaction to Alan's contact. She's undecided about whether she should believe him or confront him about his possible dishonesty. Este has never had a disagreement with her spouse. Particularly concerning are questions of trust. Alan's previous dealings with me have been suspect. "How come he's acting so strange?" Este ponders her thoughts. She's at a loss for what to do; should she contact her mother? She swiftly dismisses that concept, knowing that her mother would make a big deal out of it, maybe igniting a major feud.
Este decides to tell Anne during dinner the next time. Alan enters their room upstairs and informs Este that he just spoke with his sister's boyfriend, who informed him that she has been high all day. Este looks down at her nails and nods her head. Alan exhales deeply and says "George and I are heading to the pub. Later, I'll return home." According to Este, "Okay, that's all. I'll be making pasta tonight, so stay home." Alan raises his thumb and clicks his tongue. "Okay."
As Alan exits the room, Este waves goodbye. She decides that since she has nothing better to do, she will read a little more of her book. Minutes pass and she still hasn't gotten rid of the pit in her stomach. She is concerned. She has the impression that something isn't quite right, and she can't concentrate on her reading because of it. Este wants to check in with Alan to make sure everything is in order. Este is adamant about not bothering him, especially since he is meant to be with George. Who is his coworker's friend?
About an hour later"I think I should start cooking." Este says this as she rises from her bed. She takes out her phone and texts Alan that she is about to start dinner. "He better be home soon," Este sighs, rolling her eyes. She descends the stairs and gathers all of the ingredients for the pasta. She takes up her phone again halfway through the cooking process to see if her spouse has responded to her message. Nothing. "You've got to be kidding." "I'm scoffing," Este says. He shows there for dinner while Este is cleaning up after what seems like an eternity.
