Chapter 10. Action Plan

Marlyn tiptoes to the bathroom, careful not to make a sound. To her dismay, the lights flickered on, and Marlyn found herself face to face with a very blank Alice. Her face conveyed no emotion, neither surprise nor anger.

"Did you get in trouble again?" she signed.

Marlyn's silence alone answered the question, her face lowered feeling ashamed like a child being scolded by her parents.

"Come," Alice dragged her to the kitchen and got the first aid kit.

"I didn't know we had it," Marlyn said gulping, the silence of the room becoming too much.

"I got it yesterday," Alice said, busy wetting the cotton.

"Oh"

Marlyn winced when the wet cloth touched her face.

"Are you going to tell me how you got it?" Alice asked.

Marlyn signed, "...I got into a fight," she muttered.

Alice looked at her with knowing eyes, but did not insist on the details. After all, she knew her friend since university, she was very well aware she wouldn't get more details from her.

"Are you hurt anywhere else?"

Malryn shook her head.

"Let's go to sleep," Alice muttered, feeling drowsy.

They both layed next to Ellie, "Do you know I love you so much?" Marlyn asked.

"I know."

------

She was sitting curled upon herself, her arms hugging her knees, and face hidden over them.

Back and forth she was rocking herself to get some comfort.

It had been one day and one night since she had not moved from there.

From face to clothes, everything was covered with dirt. Her hair and bleeding nails had no shape, nor did she care for them. What she cared for was the life growing inside her. Her little ray of hope. Marlyn was so scared. Scared to grief for another life. Scared to lose the little life. It was the only thing she had, it was all she had left of her cursed life.

But she could not move, not if she wanted to survive. Those who were searching her were restless, looking in each street and sky for the criminal who had run loose.

She had been sitting under the sky, hidden behind the trash bins, protected by their smell, in the dark corner where no one would imagine someone to hide. Frozen to death, starved to hunger, she had no choice but to search the trash to feed for the while.

"Please, my love, stay strong," she prayed from time to time, tenderly caressing her little bump.

She had nowhere to go, no place to call home. Cursed by her own people and lord she had been left to die.

Marlyn woke up feeling frozen by terror. Her throat was clenched, her lungs had an invisible knot to them. She shook her head, heart still pulsing uncontrollable. You are alright now, you are alright in the safety of your home, she thought looking at her girls.

Signing, she secured the blankets over them, and sat on bed to think straight. Determined, she took a shower and wore her favorite long black coat and a cap on head to hide her face, at least to not put it stark under daylight for everyone to recognize her. She was not helpless, she wasn't powerless like she had once been. She had the ability to fight for her future and that's what she decided to do. It was time to fight back, it was time to take up her past from where she was harshly cut out. There was no hiding, no running, nothing and no one that could help her more than herself.

That freezing windy early morning, when the sun was just rising to accompany her with light, she found herself standing before the familiar wall not too far away from her apartment. She stared at it with intent, hoping it would still let her inside.

Holding her breath she knocked twice on the brown bricks, and waited.

She lightly touched the wall with the tip of her index, like one would touch an extremely breakable glass, or a bubble of water. Her finger slid right in! Like sucked into a hole.

With a huge grin on her face, she stepped forward, right into the wall.

After all, it was called black market because it didn't discriminate against anything and anyone by its legitimacy, even if it was a banned criminal.

Later that day when the sun was high and bright in the sky, Benjamin visited the company's nursery. A room full of colors greeted him, there were toys laying everywhere, there were a couple cribs, many children were sleeping, others were playing in groups. And there was a little girl sitting alone on the carpeted floor, with a piece of paper in her lap and a sketch pen in her hand, but she was just staring at it, toying with it.

The man walked to the lonely girl instinctively.

The girl looked up, a beautiful big grin brightened her face, and the first thing she said was: "are you my daddy?" She looked expectantly up at him.

Benjamin smiled, "Hello love, what's your name?" He kneeled.

"Ellie," the girl smiled even bigger.
