At dawn, the Revenant drifted along the mountainous coast of the Tidal Sea. Temp stood at his massive chamber window, watching as the misty coast passed beneath. He looked up to the horizon, where he could see wispy bands of black smoke drifting into the continent.
The ship descended and the mountain peaks became level. Then it banked into a long, wide fjord.
An eerie, gray haze hung in the fjord, trapped by the mountains. The Revenant cut through it and entered clear air again. Then it passed over a destroyed anti-air battery positioned in the water. Thirty seconds later they rounded a gentle curve, and Temp could see the remains of Last Fjord.
Drifting black smoke billowed from the wharf and a dozen other points throughout the city. Temp watched the taller buildings burn to the ground. As the ship cleared the fjord, he saw the Atrayean battle cruiser responsible for delivering his army to the city. It gently glided to the east. As it did, it fired at the ground every few seconds.
He placed his left fingertips against the glass and rings of vapor formed. He breathed in deeply and exhaled, feeling calm.
