no one's pov

you walk hand in hand with your children, alex and alice. today is their birthday, and you were coming back from the park.

"mommy! look!" your little girl shouts tugging at your dress.

you crouch down to her level. "what is it sweetie?" you question the little girl.

"can we get that?" she says pointing at the store window.

your eyes follow the small chubby finger seeing the plush whale toy in the front window of the store. you smile seeing it. "oh, i don't know..." you say standing back up. "maybe you will get one for your birthday." she pouts out her bottom lip. you giggle. "come on let's go home. the cake's waiting." she beams running towards the direction of your apartment. "alice!" you shout out walking to her with your little boy in your arms. she stops turning around looking at you, but she bumps into someone.

she falls to the ground tears pricking the corner of her brown eyes. you gasp quickly going over to her. you crouch down to her looking over her for any injuries. you sigh in relief when you didn't find any. picking her up from the ground, you lightly dust off the light blue dress she's wearing. you stand back up looking to the male, who she bumped into, still standing there.

"i'm so sorry sir." you apologize to him on the behalf of your daughter.

he smiles at the sight of you and your children. "it's okay. you have a lovely family."

"thank you."

"oh that reminds me." he says reaching into his pocket. you watch curiously as he pulls out some birthday candles. "here you can have them. i don't need them anymore."

you eye them suspiciously. 'i won't have to stop anywhere to get some.' you ponder whether to take them or not.

"don't worry they're not dangerous." he says sensing your distress. "they are special though." your children lean closer curious on how the candles were special from any other ones. he chuckles at their reaction. "you see, if you wish something using these candles it'll come true, but," he pauses for dramatic effect. "beware the consequences, for whatever wish you get granted there are side effects that follow."

you and your children were quite interesting in the story. you smile at the man. "that's an interesting story."

"oh but it's not a story. it's the truth." he says grabbing your hand putting the candles in it. he closes your fingers in a fist around the candles. he let's go crouching to your children's level. "have a wonderful birthday." he stands up patting their heads. "oh and be carful for what you wish for. you might regret it later on."

after he says that, he walks away from your family. 'what a strange man.' you thought watching him disappear around the corner. you shake your head. 'at least i don't have to buy candles now.' you look down to your hand that's holding the candles. his words flash in your mind.

"be careful what you wish for. you might regret it."

you shake your head. "come on children, let's go home."

you make it home safely with your children. "okay go wash your hands." they nod running to the bathroom. you smile going into the kitchen grabbing the chocolate cake. you start to put four of the candles the stranger gave you. you grab the cake carefully walking to the table where your children are already sitting at. you give them a warm smile setting the cake in front of them. "alright i'll be right back. don't touch the cake, alex!" you say playfully glaring at the little boy who had his hand out already trying to touch the cake.

he smiles innocently moving his hand back. "yes, momma." you smile walking past them patting the young boy's head.

"alice make sure your brother doesn't touch the cake." you slightly shout already walking to your bedroom.

"yes momma!"

you walk into your bedroom going to your bed side table. opening the drawer, you grab the white box full of matches. you then walk back to your children. "okay who's ready for cake."

they both shout in excitement. you couldn't help the big smile spreading on your face as you walk over to the table lighting the four candles. you grab a camera as you start to sing happy birthday. "alright make a wish you two!"

they both glance at each other before blowing out the candle. you take a picture smiling at the two cuties in front of you.

what a happy family. hopefully there's no impeccable doom coming their way in the near future.
