Jimmy's POV
I heard footsteps coming up the hallway, so I turned around to see Scott walking into the room, looking at me angrily. "Why are you not up yet?"
I stared at him confused. "Why do I need to-"
He cut me off. "It's Anna's first day of school!" Then he calmed down and just stared at me blankly. "You didn't forget did you?"
I sat up on the bed and faked a smile. "Oh, o-of course n-not..."
Then he just looked disappointed. I hated when Scott was disappointed in me. Angry I could handle, but disappointed...
He sighed. "You did, didn't you?"
"Maybe?"
He face-palmed. "Jimmy..."
"Daddy?"
Scott turned around. "Anna, are you ready for school?"
"Nearly, can you please do my hair?"
"Of course!" He turned back to me and gave me the 'you better be up before I come back' look, then followed Anna out. I guess I better get up then, before Scott kills me.
After I got up and got dressed, I went out to the kitchen to see Scott serving Anna breakfast. He turned in my direction. "Finally! You're up! I thought I would have to pull you out of that bed."
"Sorry, not used to getting up early." I yawned.
Anna jumped up and ran over to hug me. "Daddy!"
"Good morning Anna."
"Early? Jimmy, it's 8:30 in the morning."
"And that's early." Anna ran back over to the table to finish eating, while I walked to the kitchen to get some breakfast. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Scott roll his eyes at me and walk to the cupboard to get some plates for us.
After we finished eating, I started cleaning the dishes. When I was nearly done, Scott came rushing into the kitchen. "Anna!"
I stopped what I was doing to turn to look at him. "Scott? What's wring?"
"We have 8 minutes to get Anna to school and it's 6 minutes away!"
"Daddy? What's going on?" Anna came walking into the room.
Scott ran over to her and put her backpack on her back, then practically shoved shoes into her arms. "Quick! We now have 7 minutes until you have to be at school!" She stood confused for a second. "Now 6 minutes and 59 seconds!" She realized and started putting her shoes on.
"Chill dad, we'll make it."
"Less talking, more putting on shoes!"
"Scott!"
"You too! Why are you just standing there? Go get ready to leave!" I had never seen him this panicked before, well except when we were planning our wedding and he was worrying about every single detail. I didn't want to make him worry more, so I quickly got my shoes on and we all walked out to the car...well Anna and I walked, Scott was almost running. We decided I would drive because...well I think you can guess. Scott sat in the passenger seat yelling at me for 'driving too slow' the whole ride.
We got there jut as the bell rang. Anna jumped out of the car and Scott put her backpack on her while I got our of the car as well. She suddenly looked scared. "W-What if no one wants to be my friend?"
Scott leant down so he was at her height. "Anna. I'm sure everyone will love you, just be yourself and try to make some friends." He paused for a second, then continued. "And if anyone is mean to you, I will personally hunt them down for hurting my precious daughter." An evil grin appeared on his face.
"Scott! Don't encourage bad behaviour!"
He turned to look at me and shrugged. "I never said what I was going to do when I hunt them down." Then a cheeky smile came across his face. "I'm just gonna make sure they never hurt her again..."
"You know, you can be scary when you're protective."
"I know!" He said in a proud voice, then turned back to Anna. "Have a great day at school!" He hugged her and got up from the ground.
"Thanks dad."
I bent down to hug her as well. "See you at pick up."
"Yeah, bye dad." She let go and waved at us, then ran off towards the building. Me and Scott watched as she got further and further away, until she was out of sight. We looked at each other awkwardly.
"So...uh...home?" I looked at him questioningly. It was the first time since we had adopted Anna that it was just the two of us. I wasn't sure how to act or what to say anymore, it had been so long.
"Uh...yeah, we can't stay here all day." We both let out an awkward chuckle, then we got back in the car, and I drove us home.
The drive home was almost silent, with the occasional 'I wonder how Anna's going,' or 'the weather's nice,' to get us through.
When we got home, we silently walked to the front door and Scott unlocked it for us to walk in. I shut the door behind me, and we stood at the door. "So...now what?" I looked over to see him turning to look at me as well.
"I-I don't know." He replied.
"I guess we could..."
"Or maybe we..." We were at a loss of what to do. We heard the phone ring and both turned our heads towards it.
"I'll get it!" We both looked at each other.
"S-Sorry, you can-" He smiled apologetically.
"N-No you can..." The phone got louder and we turned back to it.
"I'll go..." Scott looked at me as if to ask if that was ok, I smiled and slightly nodded, then he walked over to answer. I left him to talk and went to sit on the couch.
After about ten minutes, he walked over to the couch and sat next to me. "You hear that Jimmy?"
I turned to look at him. "Hear what?"
"Exactly." He laid back and closed his eyes. "Silence."
I realized what he was saying and closed my eyes as well. It was nice sitting and listening to the quietness with Scott. This was the quietest it had been in years and it was refreshing not having anything we had to do, or anywhere we had to go.
