'He should have been here fifth-teen minutes ago'
I thought to myself as I continued waiting for Joshua-he's always late. I glanced down at my phone and felt a heaviness rise in my chest. The message read: Srry bae I got in somethin I shouldnt had.
A sigh escaped from my lips, I slouched my shoulders, and then I headed home. Guess all that waiting was for nothing. Then I feel a sense of worry as an ambulance zoomed by heading towards the downtown area. All I can think of is that Joshua was downtown and he was hurt. I started running after the vehicle, not even sure when I decided to. It's like my body was thinking on its own, apart from my mind. Six blocks down and my lungs start burning, I could barely breathe. Eight blocks and it feels like a snake has coiled around me and started to cut off my oxygen. I never was very athletic, it has always been something Joshua valued though. Being the captain of the basketball team, he had girls all over him; and he knew just about everyone-in and out of school. When I finally come to a stop, at 28 blocks, I observe my surroundings while regaining my loss breathe.
"Hey bae."
I hear a soft smoothing voice whisper in my ear, but before I can turn around Joshua embarrasses me from behind. I feel relieved as he held he close against he's body-he was sweaty, most likely because he was nervous.
"Josh..."
His name hardly escapes the pit of my mouth because it was so dry and my throat was scratchy. After hearing his name he released me and smiled.
"Bae, I am so so happy to see you. I have good news.
His smile was wide, his eyes a perfect swirl of midnight and sky blue, and his hair was messy. All of his features made him charming, but his personality was more enjoyable. I was losing myself in thought as we stared back at each other, so lost-that I didn't even noticed he had laced our fingers together.
"Well, I have a question first. What happened why is there-"
A cop approached us and asked if he could speak with Joshua. Of course Joshua agreed and went along with him. After he walked away and there was nothing else in my path, I could see four bodies spread out in unnatural positions across the black top. Blood drained from their bodies-forming a large lake of dark red fluids. Their clothes were strange to me: ball caps, hoodies, sneakers, torn-up jeans, with a lot of gold and silver accessories. It looked like a few of them had guns.
"They can't be gangsters... Can they?"
I ask myself as one of the suspects is thrown into the back of a police car. That suspect was Joshua. An anger crawls into me and I start yelling at the cops, demanding answers.
"He didn't do anything! Let me talk to him right now! Right now!"
Tears start to threaten me by peeking out the corners of my eyes. Then an officer pulls me over to the car Joshua was stationed in. I feel streams of warm dampness run down the side of my cheeks.
Joshua smiled at me, but this time I could tell there was pain behind it.
"Don't cry, Bae. Your eyes are beautiful, they don't need to be ruined by unwanted tears."
I cover my face sobbing loudly into my sleeves.
'Why him, why me?'
