It was almost impossible for Alec to get through to the crime scene due to the enormous mass of people standing there trying to catch a glimpse of what was going on. The media vans had front-row seats, as always. Alec knew they would try and get a picture of him again, and it would be impossible for him to avoid them. He sat in the car for a while, gathering his thoughts. His mind went back to the conversation he had had with his father the night before when he had sunk so low that he almost pleaded to his father to let him see Magnus.

Are you two in love?

It had stuck with him, it had burned non-stop since his father had uttered those words. Alec couldn't tell if it was love that he was feeling, he hadn't even let himself feel anything until very recently. He most definitely wanted to be able to have a chance to explore it. He was emotionally exhausted with the twist and turns his life had taken these months, not to mention the last week. And now this.

Alec took a deep breath. As he exited the car and started pushing through the crowd, he wondered what this would mean, especially for Magnus. Alec was sure that this death would turn everything over - again. One of the reporters caught wind of Alec in the crowd and called out his name. All heads turned towards him and they all started yelling at the same time.

"Are you and Bane in a relationship?"

"Is it murder?"

"Is this related to the shooting the other day?"

Alec just ducked his head and it was only thanks to the officers at the scene that Alec got past the rope in one piece. The first person on scene that he met, was not who he expected it to be. "What are you doing here?" he asked his brother with a little too much sharpness.

"The Captain let me in, I just had to come."

Alec took a long look at Jace's determined face, tense in a way Alec could definitely relate to. "Can you fill me in then?" he said with gritted teeth. Alec's whole body was equally tense, and he had this lump in his throat. Together the brothers moved towards the bedroom where the body was found.

"The body was found around 3 AM by the wife. Preliminary findings point to heart attack."

"Heart attack?" Alec stared at the body in the bed. "Doesn't that seem a bit too convenient? The man we've been hunting for months for at least a dozen crimes suddenly ends up dead of a heart attack?" Alec voiced his thoughts out loud. Jace just shrugged without answering. They started canvasing the bedroom in silence until a tentative voice called for Alec's attention.

"Detective. You're needed in the living room downstairs." Both Jace and Alec headed downstairs where Fray greeted them but she didn't look Alec in the eyes. Their partnership had been strained since Alec had shouted at her for poking her nose into the truth of Alec and Magnus' relationship, and she avoided Alec if she could. Now all she did was to point to the envelope that was placed on the mantelpiece. A shiver went down Alec's spine when he recognized the stationary. The name on the envelope was also all too familiar.

Magnus

"Has anyone touched it?" Alec asked Fray.

"No. We thought it would be best if you took care of it," Fray said with slightly pink coloured cheeks as she handed Alec a pair of rubber gloves.

Alec rolled his eyes and sighed inwardly. She hadn't been wrong that day, and Alec might have to admit to her at some point that he might have overreacted. Not today though. But he could at least be nice. "Good call Fray," Alec praised his partner and earned himself a weak smile in return. Alec put the gloves on and picked up the envelope and his hands shook slightly as he opened it. Inside was a handwritten letter.
