I'm not going to describe everything that I see. Brody and the blue-haired girl are just talking for a while. There are a few emotions I can read. The girl looks sad, Brody looks sympathetic, blah blah blah. I don't care about any of that. The only reason I want this girl around for a little while is because I want Aison here and on my team. Then I'll ditch the chick and it'll just be Brody, Aison and me. Besides, four people is way too many, even if half of them are Demons.
Especially if half of them are Demons.
You see, Demons are quite the handful. Almost all of them are hotheaded and always want their way, and no one else's. Demons are assholes, too. And I'm not excluding myself.
Eventually I get bored and drift off into a peaceful little nap.I wake to Brody shaking me awake harshly.
"Macrid, wake the hell up!" He hisses at me. I groan and turn my head away, not even bothering to open my eyes.
"What?" I growl at him. I open an eye and bare my sharp teeth at him. He flinches and pales a little, but recovers quickly. He knows I won't hurt him.
"We got her!" He says excitedly.
"Uh?"
"We got Aison's girlfriend! She's gonna take us to him!!"
Now I'm interested. I open my eyes and sit up straight. "Seriously?"
"Seriously."
"Nice!" I grin, giving Brody a high five. I glance at the girl walking down the driveway. She certainly looks like a Demon.
"So?" I demand.
"So what?" Brody asks.
"Is she a Demon or what?"
"Oh. Yeah, she's a Demon." Brody says to me. I feel part of me grow excited, then deflate. Ew. More Demons for me to deal with.
"Get in!" I call to the new Demon. She hurries up and hops into the car. I'm still in the front passenger seat, and that's where I'll stay. No way am I sitting in the back.
"What's your name?" I ask her.
"Shadyn." She answers. I snort in laughter, and she laughs as well.
"Shae." She said again. I grin.
"I'm Macrid." I say. I jerk my thumb at the guy sitting next to me in the driver's seat. "And that idiot's Brody."
Shae laughs, and Brody yells "Hey!" at me. I laugh as well. I catch a glimpse of Brody smiling slightly. He pulls out of the driveway.
"So where to, Shae?" He asks her.
"Death Valley." She says immediately. I frown, and so does Brody.
"Death Valley, huh?" He said questioningly. "Why there?"
Shae shrugs at him. "I dunno. I guess it's where the hunters took Aison."
Brody nods and continues to concentrate on his driving. I hold up my hands.
"Hang on," I say. I narrow my eyes at the two. "What hunters?"
"The demon hunters," explains Shae briefly. "I'm sure you've heard of them."
"Yeah, I've heard of them. What about them?" I ask irritably.
"They took Aison; what else? They took him to Death Valley 'cause they think it's a good place to burn him and send him back to Oblivion."
Shae and I stare at each other for a few moment before starting to laugh again. Brody glances back at us like we're crazy.
In case you're wondering why we're laughing, it's for two reasons. One, it's hilarious just to think that a measly little mortal could kill something as powerful as a Demon! Two, Demon's can't be burned by the lukewarm fire that humans have managed to create. It's so stupid that it's funny.
Brody rolls his eyes and dismisses the fact that we're laughing. He continues driving.
"How long'll it take to get to wherever we're going?" I whine at Brody.
He shrugs at me. "A while."
I kick the dashboard in front of me and groan in frustration. "Can't we take a bird?"
"A bird?"
"Yeah!"
Shae laughs behind us. "I think you mean a plane. Don't worry, when I first saw one I thought it was a gigantic bird, too."
I roll my eyes. "Whatever. Let's take a plane," I say, putting emphasis on the word.
"Too expensive." Brody says the two words like somehow I should already know that.
"Why would it cost money to ride a bird?"
"Plane," Shae and Brody correct me in unison.
"Plane," I say, mocking their voices.
"Because it gets you places really fast and everyone wants to ride them. Plus it's just...expensive." Brody answers my question.
"Why?" Shae and I ask together. Brody sighs. "Shae, I thought you would know these things." He says.
Shae shrugs at him.
"Don't ask me why it's expensive. I've never ridden in a plane before." He says bluntly.
"Well, neither have I." I say.
I hear Shae sigh and lean back against the seat. I do the same and kick my feat up on the dashboard. I close my eyes and let myself drift off into a troubled sleep.
