Please keep in mind that this takes place in a separate universe than the "Ainsley is related to the sisters" theory!
_________
Silence filled the halls of the prestigious Shadow High. The moon shone through every window, making a patch of light on the floor every few feet. A distant church bell chimed, announcing that midnight had arrived. Everyone was in their beds and asleep at the moment. Well, they should have been in bed and asleep…
Except for the two girls awake in the west wing, that is.
Veronica brushed a piece of hair behind Ainsley's left ear. “You're very pretty,” she whispered. “So, so pretty.” Ainsley's face turned bright red, though it was barely noticeable in the darkness.
“I-I I, I… thank you.” With a smile, she raised a hand to Veronica's and held it under her own. “You're real- I mean really- pretty too.”
The other girl giggled. “Aww, don't correct yourself! It's so cute.” Her lips, just light outlines in the dark, turned up into a grin. The corners curled in a bit too far. “Look.” She pointed at the window, and Ainsley glanced over.
“The moon?” she asked, tilting her head. “What about it?”
“It's full tonight,” Veronica explained. “Isn't it beautiful?” She scooted to the edge of the bed and got up, with Ainsley following close behind. There wasn't a balcony, but the window was big enough for them both to stand there and look.
Ainsley pulled aside the curtain. The windows were hard to open, but together they pushed the heavy frame up. Chilly night air hit her face. Veronica glanced over at her, still wearing her wide grin. Both of them turned their attention to the sky. A cold hand wandered over hers, with even colder metal gliding over her skin.
“Beautiful,” Veronica said. “But not as beautiful as you.” Her fingers clenched around Ainsley's hand. She still wasn't used to holding hands, so her nails dug into Ainsley's palm, but she didn't mind.
“No, I think you're prettier.” Ainsley took a proper look at her girlfriend, her pale skin glistening in the moonlight. She was like a vampire, sparkly and gorgeous and mystical. “You know, it's getting late…”
“Yeah, yeah. We can sleep later, Naomi is at that competition thingy. I wanna do something.” A familiar glint flickered in her eye: passion. Pure joy. Love, even. With her face turning red again, Ainsley moved her hand to the side of Veronica's face. “What are you-”
Ainsley kissed her girlfriend to muffle her words. The girl instantly melted into the warmth, leaning into Ainsley's body. Arms wrapped around her waist. And when they pulled back again, both girls laughed. Veronica's lipstick was messed up, and a smudge of it was on the side of Ainsley's face.
Nobody could bother them here. Nobody had to know.
___
Footsteps pounded down the hall as the Prefects moved to their shared room. Avery shoved the door open, Ainsley threw herself into bed, and Aiden plopped down at his desk. The door slammed at some point. A tear or two slipped down Ainsley's cheek and onto the pillow. Aiden sighed.
“Can you tell your ex to stop pranking us?” he asked, annoyed. “They do this every year.”
“I know!” Ainsley yelled. “It's not like I can control them!” Her fist slammed against the mattress, muffling the force of the blow. “I hate her, I hate them, I hate this!”
“Hey, hey, calm down.” Avery stood next to her now, placing a hand on her shoulder. “It's not your fault, they're just awful people.” Her soothing voice floated through Ainsley's ears. And like magic, Ainsley's shoulders became less tense.
“Yeah, but…” A familiar lump formed in her throat. “She seemed so nice, I didn't expect her to do all of this!”
“Ainsley! Ainsley, we're going to fix this.” Now Aiden stood nearby as well, holding a tissue out for the girl. He wiped her streaking eyeliner for her. “You heard what they said.”
   “Yeah, but-”
“No buts.” Avery's warm hand curved over her own. They made eye contact, a shine appearing in Avery's violet eyes. “Come on, we can forget all of this RainbowVision stuff for a while. Aiden, get the ice cream. What colour do you want to paint your nails?”
Sniffling, Ainsley felt her face burn red hot. She sat up and nodded at her friend, averting her own gaze. “Gold, please.” Another tear slipped down her cheek. “Thank you, both of you. You're the best.”
