It's a Saturday, which means no school, thank god. However, work is still a thing.
It's two thirty-four which means I have a good two hours to do whatever until Adrian bugs me about what I said about the picnic.
I head downstairs, seeing my brother (Isaiah) , who's only ten, cooking grilled cheese sandwiches.
"Hey Zayney Wayney, (cringe nickname he gave me), What's up?" He asks.
"Uh, nothing. Just hanging around till I go to work." I answer.
"Does Valeria still work there? She's a goddess." Isaiah sighs, all dreamy like.
"Valeria doesn't like you. You look like Mr. Potato Head." I scoff.
"And you look like a damn porcupine."
"Whatever. I'm going on a walk. Be good while I'm gone." I say and walk out. I start walking and walk past the Hospital. It's quite big and I wonder what it would be like to be in there. I've never stayed at a hospital overnight.
As I'm daydreaming or whatever, I bump into a stranger.
"I'm sorry! I didn't mean to-" I start but then look at the stranger to realize it's Adrian!
"Oh, hey, Zayna!" He exclaims, nervously.
"What are you doing here?" I ask.
"Oh, uh, just checking on my grandma. She's really sick and my parents are too busy to look after her." He answers.
"Oh. That's really nice of you. Not that I'm shocked or anything." I smile.
"Yeah...HEY! About that picnic...." He starts.
"Oh, uhm, Picnic's are nice and all." I manage to say above a whisper.
"Yeah." He says.
There's a lot of awkward pauses. I guess that's what happens when a quiet girl and usually loud boy speak to each other.
"Well, Where are you headed?" He asks.
"Nowhere. I'm just on a walk." I say.
"Oh, okay. Mind if I come with you?"
"Sure."
I start walking and he follows behind me. More awkward silence.
"How are you?" I ask.
"Fine. I'm worried about my grandma and stuff. She's like my second mother."
"Well, I'm sure she'll get better." I remark, "Hey, the park!"
The park was very beautiful. It had nice leaves and cute little birds.
Adrian and I sit on a bench.
"Zayna, Is there anything you like? You know, besides books and stuff..."
"I like concerts."
"What kind?"
"Ariana Grande's. She's really good." I beamed.
Adrian started babbling on and on about some parties he's gone too but as soon as he saw these tall looking men, he went pale. The golden retriever who's clumsy turnt as quiet as a mouse.
"Uh, we should go.." He said.
"Why? We just got here!"
He grabs my hand and stands me up.
"We just-We need to go!" He stammers, looking at the three tall men who were smirking and walking over to us.
"If it isn't egghead..." One of them says. He has greasy hair that was pulled up into a bun and had a scruffy beard.
"Go away, Jason." Adrian says, firmly.
Egghead? Adrian doesn't have a weird head shape. It's oval-ish but somehow attractive.
"Is this your girlfriend?" Jason motions towards me. Adrian turns all kinds of shades of pink and red.
"That's none of your business. Let's go, Zayna." Adrian mumbles and we walk off. I hear Jason and the two other boys snickering.
"Who were they?" I ask.
"Nobodies. Just a bunch of dumb bullies." Adrian huffed.
I wanna ask him about the egghead thing but I keep quiet. Adrian looks really red and embarrassed. I can't tell if it's because of the bullies or the question they asked him if I was dating him or not.
"Adrian, are you alright?" I ask, trying to keep up as he was still holding my hand, tightly.
Him and I are walking along a sidewalk. I didn't know where we were going but I just followed him.
"Adrian?"
"WHAT?!" He snaps at me, looking as angry as a bull. His face softens.
"Shit, I'm sorry. It's just...those guys...they made me be the worst possible person ever." He muttered.
"It's fine."
"Seriously, Zayna, I'm sorry. I won't ever yell at you again. I'm sorry."
Why is he apologizing so much? It's not like I'm mad or anything.
"It's okay, really." I say.
Adrian looks down at our intertwined hands and blushes. He quickly lets go and mumbles something.
"So, uh, we have an hour before work starts. Do you wanna go somewhere?" I ask.
I see two cats walking by each other. One of them seems calm while the other seems eager and wants to start running.
"I don't know. We could go to this cool abandoned place I found." Adrian smirks.
Oh my god. Where is this energetic ginger taking me now?
"It's cool. Especially at night." He explains.
I look at my watch. It's three fifteen. I can't believe these words leave my mouth.
"Fine. Let's go."
