"He's dead," Akaashi mumbled, averting his eyes from the leader's dead body. He didn't want to believe all the things the guy said to him, but he would be running away from the truth like he always did, and in the end, he would pay for the consequences.
Bokuto's hand was shaking when he carefully placed the male on the ground. He didn't say a word. He had a lump in his throat, couldn't get a word out, just staring at the result of his own actions. "Why did it come to this? I...I've done horrible things. I-killed someone."
"I was the one who shot him," Akaashi told him, trying to take the fault from Bokuto, even though what they did was terribly wrong.
"But I was part of it! I got my hands dirty, and I let my anger take over, because I was so devastated by what happened and-" Bokuto paused when Akaashi wrapped his arms around him in a hug, burying Bokuto's face on Akaashi's shoulders with his hand.
"We have no choice. We're stuck in this situation where we kill so we can survive." He glanced at the poodle of blood on the ground, trying to avoid a glimpse of the leader's body. "He was just desperate as we are. I understand him. But...there will always be cruelty in the world."
Bokuto sniffled. "I want everyone to survive. I just can't imagine what it would be like after the world ends."
Akaashi looked at the sky where the comet could be seen. The two glowing disaster looked magnificent that it made Akaashi's heart pump faster. Part of him was angry, even though bursting his hatred on the comet won't do anything for them to survive.
Once upon a time, he thought about being left behind as Sarukui did. He thought there was no reason to live once the world collapsed. What happens after was always the same. In the end, everyone dies. All the bad guys, the corrupt, the privileged, even the good guys and the poor, and those who were unlucky the day they were born.
But looking back at the deaths of his friends, Akaashi knew he had to live. That there was still someone he could cling to. There was still someone who trust him and stand beside him even if the world was unfair. There was still Bokuto, who would always reassure him that everything would be alright even if it wasn't. At that moment Akaashi found a reason to live. That he shouldn't give up on his life, his parents' lives, and his faith in the future.
"I'm worried about my parents," Akaashi uttered, not wanting to let go of Bokuto. "I just hope they're somewhere safe. I... I want to be there for them." His eyes gave up resisting when tears slowly fell on his cheeks.
"Everything will be okay. Don't give up, Akaashi." Bokuto told him, pulling away from Akaashi. He wiped his tears, hushing him from the worries and the fears even he couldn't stop feeling. "I don't believe what he said. They must've evacuated your parents somewhere. They wouldn't leave anyone behind."
"Bokuto-san, you already saw the citizens who were left behind in Tokyo, right? That's enough reason to believe he's telling the truth." Akaashi said.
He clenched his fists. He wanted to scream until he had no voice, but he didn't have the strength to do it. All that was left was hope and hope and hope. He wanted to find his parents, but he knew they would want him to survive than them. It was what parents always do. They put their child's life in front of them, even willing to sacrifice for their sake. Akaashi didn't want that.
"What are we gonna do now?" Bokuto asked, looking at the sky. It was almost dawn, a small light glowing on the horizon. Then there were the large comets, hours away from crashing to the earth.
"We have to meet with Washio-san and the others in the bunker. We have to hurry."
We have no time.
