Linked Beyond Existence

Chapter Four

As the weeks pass by, all the sweat and dirt that I've had turned me into a lighter version of Saoirse. I started to smell and I couldn't handle seeing my entire body covered in unknown things. That day, I asked Saoirse if she knew any nearby ponds. I hoped she would understand my question and surprisingly she did. She nodded and mumbled something under her breath.

"What did you say?" I asked, not at all nosy, but in a more suspicious and curious way.

"Ah, nathing, nathing." She spat. "Komee." She grabbed my hand and we ran outside and she guided me to a small pond with a dozen ducks swimming around. I looked around and decided to try what I intended to do. I let go of Saoirse's grip and I gestured for her to go back to the hut. As soon as she left, I pulled down my Khaki shorts and removed my shirt that was once white. I threw my clothes on the ground and I slowly walked over to the pond. I dipped my toe in to see how cold it was and it seemed fine. I walked into the pond and I felt like vomiting at all the seaweed and other mossy stuff that took place in the pond. I still continued going deeper into the pond until I started meeting some ducks quacking at me angrily. I tried to ignore them but they started pedaling toward me and started biting my skin.

"Oww! Ugh! Stop that, it really hurts!" I screamed. I started noticing blood spreading next to me. I wanted to turn around but the ducks started attacking me. I kept pushing them aside but it wasn't helping. I started crying for help but no one heard me. Obviously.

As I looked down in the filthy water I noticed blood spreading everywhere. I wanted to give up, but then I heard a howl so loud I had goosebumps. I looked up and saw an animal on a big rock looking at me. Before I could identify what it was, it jumped off the rock and into the pond and swam towards me. It started barking and biting the ducks and they started to whistle softly. As the animal scared the ducks away, I had time to escape. I slowly swam back to the bank. I turned around as soon as I hit the land to see what saved me.

A wolf. An actual wolf.

The wolf swam back to the bank as well and started to run to me. I again started panicking but when it reached me it just sat down and stared at me like a loyal puppy. I, without thinking, placed my hand in front of it. It looked at my hand, sniffed it, and rubbed its head against my palm. I couldn't control my smile and just let it out.

"Hello there..." I breathed. "You're gorgeous, you know that?"

The wolf placed out its tongue and started chasing its tail. I giggled. It was so funny. I tried to check what gender it was and saw it was a male.

"Oh wow! Thanks for saving me back there." I stayed a little bit and thought. "I'm gonna name you Amari. What do you think, boy?"

Amari started barking cheerfully and jumped up and down. After I got a little bit dried up from the whistling wind, I put my clothes back on and walked back to the hut smiling. I looked back at Amari and waved at him.

"Bye! See you soon!" I called out to him. I turned around and walked back to the hut, excited to tell Saoirse what I'd seen. When I reached my destination, my heart almost stopped when I saw Amari standing next to the branch-made doo,r panting. "Dude, what are you doing here? You're not supposed to be here!" I tried to be annoyed but I wasn't. I was happy that he was here. I banged the door waiting for Saoirse to open it. As soon as she opened the door she saw the wolf and stared at me blankly.

"Waas iz that doings here?" She asked, pointing at Amari accusingly.

"Don't worry!" I calmed her. "He's not dangerous. He saved me at the pond. Look." I showed her my bleeding leg and pointed to Amari.

"It-a hurts you?! Staz away youv besta!" She pulled out a branch from the hut and pointed it at him.

"No! No, no." I slowly took away Saoirse's weapon and walked over to Amari and hugged him. "See? He saved me." I turned to Amari. "Yeah, you did! Who's a good boy, who's a good boy?" I scratched his chin and his leg started kicking uncontrollably. "See, Saoirse?"
