"tohru, do you know the legend of the phoenix?" kyoko asked the little girl who stared brightly at her with sparkles in her eyes. "the phoenix?! mama, would you pleaseeee tell me the legend!!" tohru begged her mother while making her eyes seem puppy-like. the older woman sighed and nodded, "alright alright, but this is the last story and you're going to bed." tohru squealed in delight while hugging her pillow tightly.
"it all started long ago when god decided he wanted to throw a banquet for the 13 zodiacs. the mischievous rat who liked to play pranks on his neighbor decided to tell the cat that the banquet was being held the day after tomorrow-" kyoko stopped abruptly when tohru started to wail. "I DONT WANT TO BE A DOG ANYMORE!! I WANT TO TO BE THE CAT!!"
kyoko looked at her daughter with fondness in her eyes, "i know my sweet baby, but do not worry, this isn't the end. the next day all the animals showed up as planned while the cat wasn't anywhere to be seen. god was terribly upset that one of the zodiacs didn't attend the banquet he held but continued with the party. while all the other animals drank and danced all night long, the phoenix who was god's loyal disciple, started to get bored at the party so she went to look for the cat. she flapped her bewitching wings and soared through the sky, in search for the cat. when she finally found him she asked why he missed the party.
he explained everything and realization struck the phoenix. instead of going back to the party, the 2 animals decided to host their own mini celebration while the night was still young. ever since that day the phoenix and the cat began to get closer to one another and they soon became best friends. unfortunately, the feline developed feelings for the phoenix and god found out about it. you see, god also loved the phoenix as she was the only one who stuck with him through thick and thin. as revenge, god excluded the cat from the zodiacs so the phoenix couldn't visit the cat any more."
kyoko ended her storytelling when she noticed that the little girl was already fast asleep cuddled next to a cat stuffed animal.
