All day long Dan tried to avoid Joe, which was quite hard considering most of
his classes he had with him. And even when he did think he slipped in unnoticed, he would always be staring at Joe. The thought of humiliating himself in front of him was still there, but he just couldn't seem to remember how he humiliated himself. It was like trying to recall a dream, focusing all his energy on this one idea, this one last emotion he had, and yet he still couldn't get the full picture he needed.
As he sat staring off into space, the professor began calling his name. “Dan.” No reply from him, “Dan, hello, Dan are you there yet? Answer the question.”
“O...ok, I’m sorry sir, could you repeat it?” “Yes, in substitution for integration, what should you pick for your w? Remember, you need to pick w so that it can equal dx and whatever is left over.” Dan sat and stared at the problem for a few seconds, math never being his best subject. But he had to take it to go to graduate school. “Um, I’m not sure sir, would it be radical x?” “No, good try though.”
The professor went on through some more kids until, “Joseph, can you find w so dx is equal to dw?” “Um, w is equal to x squared plus one. So one half dw is equal to xdx.” Dan looked up and surprised at how simple a problem it was yet almost everyone had gotten it wrong. As he looked over it carefully he noticed that Joe was tilting his head a bit to the right, just enough to be able to see Dan in his line
of vision well, and he stuck his tongue out at him. Dan turned bright pink at what had
he
just done and Joe seemed to almost laugh under his breath.

“Hey Dan, how was class?” Jake asked as they headed over to the game
room. Dan just shrugged but didn’t say much. “Hey bud-o, cheer up a little OK? It’s
not like its the end of the world, that was all last year and stuff. So do you remember
yet what happened last weekend?” Jake got a huge grin on his face and Dan stuck
his head in his hands.
“No, I can’t remember a fucking thing man. I’ve been thinking about it all day
and nothing comes back to me. I can’t stand it, is now just annoying the shit out of
me man.” Dan said his face turned a bit white from walking in the cold winters day.
“Well bud, if you need something to jog your memory, I have a fun fantastic video of
you!” Jake’s grin never seemed to leave his face and Dan only froze a little. All the
