"niall," demeter, the goddess of the harvest and also niall's mother, called from the house. niall was out in the fields where he spent most of his time, picking flowers and laying in the grass.

"yes, mother?" he called, reaching up to adjust the flower crown that was resting on his head.

"come home, love, it's time for dinner."

"okay," niall called back, gathering his flowers. suddenly, he felt an odd sensation, as if someone was watching him. when he turned, though, there was nothing there, and he swallowed back his anxiety and made his way back to their house.

being a demigod was surprisingly normal for him. It may have been the fact that he didn't have any powers, but he supposed he felt just like any other kid did. he saw no reason for himself to feel any different. he spent most of his time at home with his mother, where he was happiest.

"are you ready to eat?" demeter asked as she set the table. niall nodded fervently and pressed a kiss to his mother's cheek before going up the stairs to put his flowers in his room. he sighed as he arranged them the way he liked.

soon after, demeter called niall downstairs, and he went down to have dinner with his mother.

"how is the weather?" demeter asked, smiling, and niall smiled back shyly. his mother told him that it was spring and summer all the time on their island after he was born because he made her so happy.

"it was lovely, just like every day. thank you, mother," he said, straightening his pastel pink shirt. niall liked pastel colors, light pinks, baby blues, everything light and soft and warm. "though..."

"what?" demeter questioned, wondering why niall had stopped with his spoon halfway to his mouth.

"i felt as though someone was watching me," he said carefully. now that he thought about it, he still felt that way, and subconsciously turned to look over his shoulder. when he turned back around, demeter was ghostly pale. "mother? are you all right?"

"finish your supper," she said tightly, and stood from the table. "everything is okay, niall, i just have to make a call."

"a call?" niall was confused now. his mother had told him that they lived on that island so that nobody would bother them, so that she wouldn't have to speak with anyone. "to who?"

"to hades," she said, and just the sound of his name sent shivers down niall's spine.

"h-hades?" niall stammered. "from...the underworld?"

"yes, technically that's his name. i think he goes by liam now, though," demeter said, going through a drawer until she found a golden coin, called a drachma. "you go upstairs now, niall. everything will be fine."

so niall went, climbing the stairs as slowly as possible. he heard his mother call on the goddess isis, who managed communication between the gods. as he shut the door to his room, he could hear them arguing, and he pulled the blankets over his head and shut his eyes.
