Key glanced up at Pixel. Their eyes where shining as they stared off into the distant void. "Are you ready Key?" They asked. Key felt like he should say yes, but he was still just so nervous. He stayed silent and glanced hesitantly at the seemingly endless nothingness that stretched out in front of him and Pixel. the glistening rocks behind him glittered in the corners of his vision. vines hung down from the edges of the cave. Would this really be the last time either of them would see their own world again? Key glanced back up at Pixel again, to see a warm encouraging smile on their face. Even though neither of them were related, Key had always viewed Pixel as an older sibling. They had both grown up together and played with each other when they were little kids. They would visit each other so often, it was almost as if they lived together.

Key grabbed Pixel's hand. They had always been their for Key when he got nervous. When Key would get anxiety as a young child, They would always comfort him. And right now, Key felt as though he needed comforting more than ever. He had been expecting this day for a long while, but standing here, in front of the open sparkling void gave him an immense feeling of fear that he couldn't describe.

His whole life, Key had been told about the gateway. He and Pixel would both have to cross the boundaries between worlds to get to the other side once they turned 14. His entire life, his mother had been warning him and preparing him for it. She told him the exact location of the void portal, and what to do when he got there. She claimed that it would be the important moment in his life. He would have to do it someday.  But she never actually told him what it would be like crossing worlds.

Why do we need to do this anyways?  Key wondered.

It was a question that had been looming over him his entire life. He had asked his mom that question so many times, but never got a single reply. His mom would always brush it off, or pretend she hadn't heard him. He just wished that he could know. He was 10x more scared right now then he had ever been in his entire life. What would traveling to the other side feel like? What was going to happen? What would they do once Pixel and him got there...? Would there be someone waiting for them on the other side?

Key's thoughts were interrupted by the voice of Pixel. "Key, its going to be alright. I will make sure to stick with you every step of the way. Whatever's coming next, we can do this together." Just hearing Pixel's voice gave him a tiny boost of confidence. Pixel was the one thing that could calm him down when his anxiety got the best of him. He took a deep breath.

"are you ready?"

Key still wasn't sure if he was ready, but he knew that he had to say yes eventually, otherwise they would've been stuck their all day.

"yes." He squeezed Pixel's hand tightly. His heart was thundering loudly in his chest. breathe, breathe, He felt Pixel gently pull him forwards. This was really happening. Key's shoulders relaxed as he felt the void tugging on him, pulling him in closer. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all... He felt the stars twinkling around him, it was like the sky was pulsing with thousands of glittering jewels.

It felt so... peaceful...

till a blinding white light spread across Key's vision in a split second. He felt himself get swept off his feet. the world was dancing in a blur of ringing and spinning. The previously calm pulsing stars where now jagged fragments of glass, flooded everywhere in a whirlpool of color. Key tried to scream but his voice felt pushed down into his throat. Pixel's hand was no longer holding on to his. He couldn't see them. He couldn't hear them. The only thing in his head was the fear and confusion of the whirling void.

then it felt like he was falling...

falling....

falling...

falling...

till it all went dark.

Pixel blinked awake. The world around them seemed still and dark. It was probably nighttime. With a small wobble, they stood up, trying to shake the bleariness from their head. Traveling through worlds hadn't been as bad as they had thought. One moment, they had felt the calm pull of the void, and then the next, a warm dark feeling had flooded through them, and they had drifted asleep, to then wake up here... where ever this was.

They glanced around. In the fuzzy gray dark, they could see the faint shape of Key. the blue ring of flesh below their floating head glowed slightly in the dark. Pixel glanced around for a moment. Their father had told them that on the other side, their would be another void portal in a cave where they woke up, but Pixel didn't see anything like that. They couldn't even tell what was around them. It was all so dark and confusing.

Pixel kneeled down next to him, and gently tried to shake Key awake. They could feel the soft pulsing of his heart and his quiet breath in the cold silence. They whispered his name a few times, but he wouldn't respond.

After a few moments of silence, Pixel shook him even harder. "C'mon Key, wake up!" A few moments passed by, but eventually, Key began stir. Then he suddenly bolted awake, his wide eyes staring up at Pixel. "Pixel!" he exclaimed, and before their brain could even process it, Key flung his arms around them, embracing them in a warm tight squeeze of a hug.

"Key!! get off of me!! you know I don't like hugs!" Pixel screeched, flailing their arms around and trying to get away from him. Key just ignored them and snuggled in tighter. "I was so scared... I
