"He spared us. He said, Tell your mum that we have a deal. What deal?" Michael asked
Polly paused before she said, "It will just be you two, Isiah the kids and me going to Australia. Think about that."
Lola stood up from where she was sitting, "What deal, Mum? What deal did you make with Luca Changretta? What deal would mean he had to come here and point a gun to my face to say he accepts it?"
Polly walked over to the table then said, "A deal to spare your life."
"In return for what?" Michael asked
"Men don't have the strategic intelligence to conduct a war between families. Men are less good at keeping secrets out of their lies." Polly said
Lola realised what she was saying, "You agreed to give up Tommy to save our lives. You never forgave him, did you?"
Polly leaned on the table, "We're out of our league."
Lola shook her head, "No. No, we don't do that to our own."
"Think! If it wasn't for me, you'd be smoke blowing out of a mortuary chimney. Think about that." Polly said
Polly then left the room, "If we tell Tommy, his shit will hit the fucking roof." Lola said
"Now that's a Johnny phrase if I've ever heard one...If he finds out, it will look like we're traitors to Tommy. But we did it to protect our mum, yes?" Michael asked
Lola nodded, "Yeah. He'll get it."
"This is the first family I feel like I belong in, with the Johnson's I felt out of place and different but here it feels so much better." Michael said
Lola sat back down and said, "Brother, we are in some deep shit."
. . . . . . . .
The next morning Lola was standing out in the alley behind the houses when she heard a car horn, then another, then a long car horn, "Fucking hell..." She walked around the side of the house, "Charlie for crying out loud!...oh great it's you."
