I've always hated him. Every single fiber of my being hated him. I knew he and I were destined to be enemies from the moment I set my eyes on him. His breathtakingly beautiful face angered me, his silky black hair, his mischievous eyes, his full lips that always opened into that irritatingly endearing smile. I hated all of it. I knew for a fact that we would never grow to become friends when we did nothing but compete and backstab each other. There was simply no camaraderie between us.
We began as interns. Two idiots fresh out of college looking to establish themselves in a big company. We vied for our team leader's attention, ensuring that while one of us took a step forward, the other was always two steps back. Sometimes I'd conveniently forget to tell him about a meeting, and he would do the same thing the following week. I'd work my ass off on a proposal only for him to submit one before me. I'd mix salt with his coffee, he'd spill it all over my papers. I would stay up late, finishing all my work, and he would have already submitted it days ago, without my knowledge.
We fought like this for months, thinking that by the end of our internship, we would say sayonara and one of us would get the prized permanent position at Reef Industries. Turns out Reef had room for two, so here we are, two employees, sitting at our desks with our backs to each other, working away on our latest project.
We tried not to interact with each other much, since it ruined both our days. It had been a year already of working alongside each other, and we've only grown in our hatred.
"Y/N did you send me the latest budget sheets the finance department sent? I don't know what kinda numbers I'm working with here." Shouts Janice from her office. She's a kind, older woman, who spent most of her free time reading romance novels with shirtless men on the cover. She recommends them to me all the time, and I'll admit I've been tempted to pick one up, but I think for now my YA fantasy books suffice.
"Yup! I sent it this morning!" I shout back.
"I would have had it sent last night."
I whip my head around to glare at Taehyung. He's facing me, leaning back in his chair, his arms clasped behind his head and his legs spread wide into that typical man spread look. The shit-eating grin on his face sends my blood boiling. "Do you have something to say to everything?"
"Only where you're concerned. It's my job to make your life hell. Perhaps one day you'll take the hint and finally quit."
I force a laugh, "I could say the same for myself. Hope to see your resignation soon." I turn back around before he can say anything else, typing away furiously at my latest work. Maybe I should start reading those novels that Janice always gives me. Then we'll form a book club and I can convince her to transfer Taehyung into another department.
"Y/N," Taehyung's deep voice comes from behind me. I spin my chair around to see that he's no longer seated at his desk but rather standing directly behind me, squinting at my screen. "That is the ugliest shade of blue I've ever seen."
I give him my most bored look. "What do you want?"
"Why are you working on the design evals for the tea company? You should be working on the one for the children's toys." he asks.
I look at my screen and let out a frustrated groan. "Shit." Of course, I picked the wrong file to get started on. The deadline's this Friday and I have nothing to show. "I bet you're happy."
"A little. But still, company name's on the line, don't mess it up."
"So I've been told." I roll my eyes. "What's in your hand?"
"Papers for the children's toys copyright information. I need your signature before I show Janice."
I sign it quickly and my eyes follow him into Janice's office. Taehyung's tall and impeccably fit. His black pants hug him nicely, and I can't believe I'm saying this, but even his ass looks nice. And those damn broad shoulders. His blue dress shirt clings to his muscles, outlining his body into a series of curves and lines. I bet he has abs. Where'd he find the time to hit the gym? He works like a dog and refuses to leave before I do, and I leave pretty late. He turns around, catching me staring at him, and grins. I avert my eyes quickly, but it's already too late.
A few moments later I hear the rhythmic patter of his feet come up behind me. I watch him through the reflection on my screen as he brings his face closer to mine, the chain around his neck brushes the back of my neck as he bends to get to my level. His breath is hot in my ear, his voice a deep, throaty whisper that sends a burst of unknown sensation down my body, electricity through my blood. "Like what you see?" he laughs that baritone laugh. I almost moan. "Your eyes were eating me up. Are you sure you're not in love with me?"
He brushes his nose against the shell of my ear, almost as if by accident. I unknowingly arch into his touch, pathetically begging for me. Is this enough to call HR on him?
He steps away and I shift uncomfortably in my seat. I turn around to give him another withering glare but instead I'm met with a surprise. Taehyung's face is slightly red, and a rosy blush spreads across. He tries to mimic confidence, but falls short, looking more surprised than I am, as if he didn't quite expect to do the things he just did. My body's frozen in place. I had never once in my life seen Taehyung blush. That face simply didn't exist to me.
"Hey Taehyung, can you walk with me to Derek's office? I can't face him alone." We both look to see who the squeaky voice belongs to. It's the newest intern, Barry. He's a sickly looking child, but a design prodigy. He also worships Taehyung. I'm pretty sure I've seen a corner of his desk dedicated to a Taehyung shrine, filled with pictures of them together and even a small candle I think he lights every time he prays for him. I should find myself a little protegee.
"Sure Barry, lead the way." Taehyung leaves without another word, and I'm left to wonder what exactly happened between us.
