It happened a month after homecoming.
Peter was not feeling happy on this particular day.
He had been checking Liz's Facebook account for the past month since she was in Oregon. It was his fault she had to move anyway.
It wasn't fair. Liz didn't deserve that. She was a sweet and kind girl who always looked out for others, he could honestly find no flaw within her. She didn't deserve to be ditched by her date to homecoming or to have her own dad be a villain. And yes, he still liked her, he was getting over it, yeah, but he wasn't over her completely yet, after all you don't get over someone you liked for a whole year in just a month.
Most of her new posts for the month were about how much of a stranger she felt like in her new school, and about how much she missed her friends from Midtown, which only made Peter feel more guilty. But recently, she seemed more happy in her posts, and it was because she apparently got a boyfriend.
Peter couldn't help but feel jealous at seeing this guy kiss Liz on the cheek, seeing Liz smiling at him like he was her world, to see them having so much fun together, that could've been him if he hadn't been forced to put her dad in jail.
Hence, Peter had been laying his head down on a desk in the auditorium, feeling upset and down when he heard Michelle's- or MJ's voice.
"Hmm, I thought I smelled the mayor of loserville from somewhere." Peter just looked up, his eyes narrowing.
MJ was walking towards him with that same blank look on her face.
He simply groaned in annoyance and put his head back down, "Go away MJ, I'm not in the mood."
"Well that's not a nice way to talk to someone who lets you use their nickname. Actually I come here around this time to study, so I'm not leaving just for you, Parker." She replied.
"Then do me a favor and don't mess with me, I'm trying to be upset in peace."
"Yeah, whatever loser."
It was silent for a few minutes until Peter started to hear the sound of a pencil, he looked up to see MJ sketching in her notebook.
He glared at her, "Are you drawing me right now?" Normally Peter wouldn't care about that, heck, he normally wouldn't care about MJ just being MJ. He had honestly come to see her as a friend this past month ever since she admitted to seeing everyone in the decathlon team as friends. They had even had some (somewhat) friendly conversations. Her little pet names, or drawings, or middle fingers didn't bother him anymore, he knew that was just how she showed her own type of affection, but at the moment, he wasn't in the best mood.
"Yeah, so? I didn't have anything new to study." She replied.
"Oh for fucks sake, MJ! I told you I wasn't in the mood!" He snapped.
She narrowed her eyes at him, before putting her notebook down, but keeping her eyes trained on him.
"Ok, what's eating you, dork?" She questioned. "That doesn't normally bother you."
"Why should I tell you that? Why do you even care? It's not like you actually care about me! All you are to me 60% of the time is rude! Or are you mad that I'm not putting up with your bullshit?!" He couldn't help but half yell.
She was silent as she gaped at him, he could see the clear shock on her face and in her eyes, he could also see the hurt behind it. Which made him feel guilty.
And if he had been paying attention earlier, he probably would have seen the genuine concern in them when she asked what was wrong.
He sighed, "I-I'm really sorry MJ, I didn't mean to yell at you, I'm sorry, it's just, I'm in a bad mood, and that's not your fault, I really don't mind when your being...Well, you. I just- I snapped, and I shouldn't have, I apologize."
