I had this dream once based off of The Walking Dead. For whatever reason I still can't stop thinking about it and I enjoy writing so I'm going to turn it into an entire story. Disclaimer: it doesn't follow my dream exactly. I'm adding a lot to make it make sense.
Some backstory: the plot is completely different than the show, Carl is 19 already, this is going to start somewhat weird, I may go back one day and give it a better starting point but I'm just going to start it where my dream started.
Main Characters:
Rick Grimes
Carl Grimes (19)
Judith Grimes
Katrina (Kat) (Kay - only Carl) (19) brunette brown eyes
Maggie Rhee
Glenn Rhee
Michonne
Daryl Dixon
Carol
Extras:
Dean (grown man)
Dorothy (grown woman) (basically Cassandra's mom)
Amy (grown woman)
Nathan (22) blonde with brown eyes
Cassandra (Cassy) (17) brunette with blue eyes

Based about 2 years post-apocalypse
KATRINA'S POV:
Carl and I entered first, going in opposite directions to clear out his old home. Rick followed close behind and then Daryl immediately after. Maggie, Carol, Michonne, and Glenn stayed outside in order to protect Judith and the others we had with us that didn't really know how to defend themselves. We ran into them as a group a couple months back and they have been pretty useful and loyal. Carl and I went upstairs only to find 3 empty bedrooms: 2 on the left and 1 on the right that used to be his. Rick and Daryl cleared the main level before bringing our group inside. Everyone filed in pretty quickly and Carol made sure the front door was locked. Rick checked the back door while Daryl and Michonne checked the windows. Since there was a second floor to the house, Carl and I went back upstairs and made sure that all of the windows were unlocked. Yes, unlocked. Just in case we needed to escape in an emergency. What's a walker gonna do? Climb up the side of the house and open the window to get in?
After clearing the house and making sure we have everything safe, Rick began assigning rooms. We find it easier to be assigned so that everyone is in places that would be useful. Rick and Michonne would be in the master bedroom downstairs along with Judith. Daryl and Carol had the living room. They're the lightest sleepers so we figure they would do best in the center so they get woken up if anything happens. Cassandra, Amy, Dorothy, Nathan, and Dean were put in the room farthest to the back of the house upstairs on the left, they're the weakest but Nathan and Dean can handle their own if they need to. Maggie and Glenn were assigned to the other room on the left near the stairs. They can help protect everyone upstairs if anything goes wrong.
"Carl, that leaves you and Katrina in your old room upstairs." Rick tells us, taking Judith from Amy. Carl and I in the same room? Really? Thats your master plan here? Everyone took their things to their assigned location and settled in as much as we could. Dean claimed to have a headache, so he lied down to take a nap. The rest of us came back down and Rick asked where Dean was.
"Said he had a headache. Stayed upstairs to take a nap." Glenn filled him in. Rick just nodded and continued getting everyone's attention.
"Daryl, Michonne, Glenn, Maggie, and I are going to go around to some of the other houses and see if there's anything there. Food, weapons, anything we may need. Carol, if you don't mind I'm gonna have you stay here with Judith." Carol nodded at this statement and Rick continued. "Nathan, you're a good hunter. You and Dean go out into the woods and set a couple traps not far from here whenever he wakes as long as it's still light out. I don't want anyone out in the dark." Everyone agreed and the four he mentioned headed toward the front door with Rick.
"What about us?" I asked Carl. He shrugged and took off towards his dad.
"Hey dad, what do you want Kay and I to do?"
"I want y'all to stay here and hold up camp. You're the strongest two here. Protect your baby sister..." and then he whispered something to him. I couldn't make out what he said but Carl smiled and agreed with his dad before coming back in my direction.
"What was that?" I asked as soon as he got back to me.
"Oh don't worry about it." He smiled.
"Absolutely not. Carl Grimes never smiles this much. What did he say?" I laughed a little. Carl chuckled and walked around me into what looks like used to be a laundry room and I followed. I'll probably turn this into a bedroom for myself if we're here for a while. I'd rather be down here. I'll feel more useful. "C'mon now you know you're not getting off that easy. There's no secrets in the apocalypse." He looked at me for what felt like forever with this stupid grin on his face. I shifted my weight from one foot to the other and leaned against the counter.
"Okay." He started. "He told me that..." He trailed off and just looked at me. "He told me that I needed to protect you, too." He smiled.
"Oh, bullshit I don't need no protecting. I can take care of myself and he knows that. What did he actually say?" I tried to call his bluff.
"I'm serious. That's what he told me." He confirmed this when he looked down like he was embarrassed but smiled and looked back at me.
"Are you kidding me?" I slightly laughed. "Your dad thinks I can't take care of myself?" I crossed my arms.
"No, no, no, that's not it." He put his hand up to stop me. "He cares about you like he does me. And I care about you, too. A LOT." He emphasized that last part. "I was gonna do it whether or not he told me to."
"Awww does Carl act like he has another sisterrrr?" I teased. He gave me this weird face.
"No." He said disgusted. "I care about you a lot but not like you're my sister. That's weird." He stated. Now I'm confused. I looked at him with a face like I was telling him to explain himself. "Not..a sister. But like..uhh..like a uhh..a friend. A really good friend." He stumbled over his words like he was nervous. This made me laugh a little.
"Thats cute, Grimes. Whatever." I shook my head while smiling and went around him to the washer and drier in the middle of the room. I started messing with the nobs on the washer.
"C'mon now, Kay. You know better than to think that thing is gonna work." He said leaning against the back of it. Only Carl calls me Kay, everyone else usually just calls me Kat.
"Carl, how long did you live here?" I smart mouthed him a little.
"My whole life before all hell broke loose, why?" He looked at me puzzled.
"You ever notice the fire hall a block or two down the road?" I asked as I walked around to the back of the washer and started messing with the wires near the floor.
"Yeah what about it?"
"Well, in the old world, fire halls, hospitals, and all things like that had generators that had enough power to light them bitches up for about 10 years, give or take. They kick in automatically when the power goes out and then turn off and recharge when the power comes back on. Same with the prison, why do you think we had running water for showers? They had a generator, the portion of it for the lights had just beed destroyed by walkers." I stopped messing with the wires when one of them sparked in my face. Carl jumped and pulled me away from it when that happened. "Relax, I'm fine. Now, if we're lucky, since you used to live so close to the building, your house may be on the same power source as the fire hall. This will mean that the generator will be giving power to your house and all other houses on that same power source." He looked at me amazed.
"How...how did you know that?" He asked.
"My parents taught me that as a kid. We used to live down the road from a police station so my house was the same way. We never lost power for longer than like 10 minutes. They're deemed 'priority buildings' so they all have one." I did air quotes with my fingers.
"You know how amazing it would be if we didn't have to wash clothes by hand and we could actually shower again?" He started getting excited.
"Calm down now, I wasn't making promises, I was just filling you in." I stopped him. "It would be nice though." I said quietly as I continued messing with the nobs.
