Introduction

Pee pee and poo poo are such endearing little words aren't they? Much cleaner sounding than feces or urine. I suppose that's why we use them with our messy little children. My cousin's kid used to say, "I gotta make" when she needed to have a bowel movement. Gotta make what? Aren't children merely getting rid of waste and not making a masterpiece? And yet children can be so proud of themselves and this very accomplishment. It is this very pride which helps them to become potty trained. Use this pride--use whatever you can to help you through. Potty training is not for the faint of heart. It has frightened even the sturdiest of parents.

Have you ever heard the term, "nipple confusion?" It refers to newborn babies who go back and forth from breastfeeding to bottle feeding. Since babies suck differently on each kind of nipple it can cause confusion and upset in the little one. So it is with the diaper and underpants in the toddler. I believe the toddler can suffer from "diaper confusion."

Depending on what is important to you, potty training can take as long or as short as you like. So many parents think it's up to their toddler to "be ready" to be trained. I've discovered it's the parents who need training! If you'd like to beleger the potty training process that is up to you. However I believe most parents would like to get this monumental step over with. If you (the parent) switch back and forth from diapers (or pullups) to an extended period of time your child will come to take this for the norm. The child will continue to depend on the diaper and not on themself.

There are no real shortcuts in potty training, but I truly believe for most children it can be accomplished in one week. This is if the parent is committed and they don't have a weak stomach!
