"Talia Viviana Horton! Come down here now, dinner's ready."
I don't know why my mom insists on using my full name all the time,I prefer Thorn….ugh. I rolled my eyes and glanced down at my wonderful little feline who was napping comfortably by my feet.“You're so lucky you don't have to deal with an overbearing mother,Raul..”,I told him.
“Yup. Just the perks of being an immortal cat...”,he yawned, stretching.
Yeah,Raul can talk. My father also accidentally turned him immortal when he got run over by a car one time when he ran out into the street. Dad says he couldn't stand seeing my 7-year-old self standing on the sidewalk all upset and crying over my dead cat. So he tried biting the cat, thinking it would only revive him. But that wasn't the case,it just turned him immortal since cats can't just be revived with a vampire bite like humans can. Something to do with the way their genes work.I snort at him and quickly write in black ink,Dec.9th before closing my leather-bound journal. I get up from my small plush carpet and tuck a stray black and red hair behind my ear. I slide down the black iron spiral staircase's banister down to the dining room, which was all clad in red and black decor. My parents are super traditional when it comes to the whole Dracula-vampire theme. I hop off the end of the banister and stumble back as my mom rounded the corner to the stairs.
"Talia honey, If you're trying to kill me,you can stop now. You can't kill the undead.", my mom chuckles, taking a step back and helping me regain my balance. I laugh at my mom's attempt at a sarcastic joke as I lean against the railing.
"Sorry,Mom. Please don't press any charges."
"Oh, I could never put my own daughter in jail, how horrid that would be.", my Mom said back dramatically as ever, her Romanian accent dripping off every word.
My mom led me to the dining room table, which was decked out in purple(my favorite color) velvet tablecloth, a pleasant change from the usual blood-red. She told me that her and Dad have some big news to tell me as she sat down next to him. I grinned delightedly. I plop down on a seat at the dining table across from them as my dad pulled out a map of the United States and laid it flat on the table. I give my dad a weird look, furrowing my eyebrows at the map.
My mom and dad smile. "Since you're turning 18 in about 2 months and we know you need a break from this town and a bite of real life….", my dad drawls out, waiting for me to laugh at his pun. I just roll my eyes with a grin.
"We've decided for your birthday,to let you spend 2 weeks -unsupervised- but we'll call you everyday to check up on you, in any city your heart desires.", my mom finished. As the full gravity of my mom’s words sank in,my eyes slowly widened and I started to feel weightless. A giddy grin spreads across my face. I'm so happy right now,
I suddenly feel like I'm floating on a cloud...wait,I am! I rise into the air with the biggest smile on my face that I've ever had in my life.
I fly away (Yes, some vampires can fly, it just depends on what power they have. Every vampire is born with a special power that's supposed to fit their personality. It usually pops up during puberty along with getting your fangs. Mine is flying, which kind of makes sense since my mom describes me as free-spirited.) from the table, up the stairs to the balcony outside my room and scream, "Woo hoo!",at the top of my lungs, twirling around, literally dancing in the night breeze with my black and red hair gliding in the breeze.
Oh my god, this is the best thing that's EVER happened to me! Finally! A break from these old-school citizens and outdated ideas! I can finally be completely free! I don't even care that the whole town probably heard me. I rush back down to my room, down the stairs, and barrel into my mom and dad with a huge hug who are now standing in the kitchen with practically glowing faces. They hug me back, laughing. "So where to, kiddo?", my dad asks me once I let go and calm down a little.
