1- the evacuation

The sound of screeching sirens rang in Ariana's ears as she ran to get her brother from his room. Heart pounding she burst into his room running over to his bed, shaking him awake.
"Alex we need to go now!" She exclaimed to the half asleep boy, voice strained. He sat up, clueless for a second before reality dawned on him, he shot up from his bed grabbing her hand and pulling her out of the house.

They dashed through the garden towards the bomb shelter.
Ariana glanced up, in the distance she could make out the planes dropping the deadly bombs and felt a lurch in her stomach.
When they reached the shelter, Alex pushed her in. Looking around she realised her mother wasn't there, " mum?"
She whispered. " mum!" , screaming, she struggled against her elder brother to go back to their mother. She finally broke free and she ran towards the house, seeing her mother exiting. She ran forwards to the woman.
" Ariana what on earth are you doing? Go back to the shelter immediately!"
"but mum" the girl cried, " I thought you weren't going to make it"
" why would you say that, darling, I'm ok".

As the two entered the shelter, Alex turned towards Ariana.
" why did you go back for mum when she said she was coming,think! Stop being an idiot"
Ariana wrinkled her nose but she held her tongue.
The boy scoffed
"could you two for once not fight?"
The siblings turned to their mother who was looking at them sternly with her emerald green eyes ( which both siblings had inherited)
" now apologise" she demanded
' oh come on!' Ariana thought, groaning.
" sorry" the two said, earning a smile from their mother.

Ariana had no choice but to try to sleep in the small metal shelter, listening to the loud explosions and continuous sound of the bomb sirens.
She woke up with a start the next morning. Alex and their mother were whispering to each other
" you have to go, it's not safe here"
" I know, but I'm not sure if Ariana will be too happy"
" what about me? " the girl yawned pulling her dark brown hair out of her face.
" sweetie, I have decided to send you and your brother to the countryside, you will be staying with a lovely man called professor Kirke,
We've had it planned for a while. There will be four other children staying there too. "
"WHAT!!" Ariana shouted " you can't, what if you get hurt." She wavered on the next bit " what If something happens to dad?"
"Ariana,sweetie, you have no choice in the matter, you are leaving tomorrow, now go and pack your bag".

Ariana and Alex stood at the station tears running down their faces as they clung to their mother.
" both of you please don't argue too much, and Ariana, listen to your brother" their mother said, kissing their foreheads.
Ariana clung to her as if her life depended on it, sobbing into the woman's blouse.
" mum, please don't make us go"
She cried.
" don't worry, you'll be back soon enough".
Ariana felt like pointing out that, maybe there wouldn't be anything to come back to, but she held her tongue.

Saying their last goodbyes they headed toward the train, trailing past many other crying families. All emotions settled into anger and frustration in Ariana, resulting in her face settling into a scowl as she boarded the train, pushing back the next wave of angry tears that were threatening to come. The whole ride was spent with the two siblings sitting silently, Ariana glaring out the window and Alex sending her worried glances every so often, feeling utterly lost.
