Stuck in the Shadows

       One of the biggest misconceptions of having twins is thinking they'll be exactly alike, that just wasn't the case for the Curtis parents. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis got married at the age of 20 and decided to try for kids two years later. They got lucky, getting pregnant with twins on the first try. On January 5, 1945, Mrs. Curtis gave birth to two healthy babies: Darrel Shaynne Curtis Jr. and Delilah Stella Curtis. The two babies were almost identical with dark brown hair and cold green/blue eyes, but their personalities couldn't be more different. Darrel "Darry" was more responsible, mature, and smart. Delilah was cold, tough, rebelling, and irresponsible.

       After four years the Curtis parents decided to grow their family. They got pregnant with a single boy and he was born on October 8, 1949. Sodapop "Soda" Patrick Curtis was born and Darry couldn't be more fond of the new addition, Delilah didn't feel the same. Delilah, being more rebelling, was always shadowed by her older twin brother, the new baby would only cause her to go fully into the darkness. Sodapop and Darry became a dynamic duo and Delilah was even pushed away by her twin, her best friend. It caused Delilah to become independent and scared of commitment at the prime age of six.

       When the twins were six and Soda was two, Mrs. Curtis became pregnant with her fourth child. On July 22, 1951, Ponyboy "Pony" Micheal Curtis joined the Curtis siblings, pushing Delilah even farther back. She had never felt love from her siblings or father, but her mother was different. Mrs. Curtis always wanted a little girl growing up and Delilah was that. No matter how cold and tough Delilah was, she saw under it. She saw the delicate, broken little girl she fell in love with when she opened her blue/green eyes. She was her baby girl, her everything. Delilah looked up to her mother. She was hardworking and beautiful, everything she dreamed to be.

       When the twins were 20, Sodapop 16, and Ponyboy 13, their parents got into a fatal car accident. The twins had to take charge of the two younger siblings. Of course, Darry was more responsible than Delilah and he took that as an advantage to constantly beat her down. If only he could see how that affected her.
