A Future Together

It was the day of the baby shower. Donald's friends and Kingsley's friends all brought gifts for the parents-to-be and the new couple were grateful for them as it would make shopping for baby supplies less hectic.

"So..." Ben finally asked. "You're pregnant?"

"Yes," Kingsley nodded. "I wouldn't be having a baby shower if I wasn't,"

"Do you have a name picked out already?" Jake eagerly asked.

Donald looked over to his girlfriend to see if it's be alright to reveal their daughter's name, and he received a nod of confirmation. "Her name's going to be Diane,"

The rest of the baby shower went well. They all chatted, played games, and did activities. They also watched a movie using Kingsley's parents' project to project the movie onto the side of the house.

Donald would be lying if he claimed that he wasn't bothered by Myles' presence. Part of him wanted to kick Myles out, fearing that Myles would make a move on Kingsley.

But Myles didn't. He occasionally sent glances to Kingsley with a longing look in his eyes and sent glares of jealousy towards Donald, but nothing else. He was respectful of Kingsley's choice and gave up on even thinking of wooing her.

Kingsley was grateful that her boyfriend and her friend didn't fight. She wished that they could make up and be friends again, but she was just glad that they at least tolerated each other's presence and didn't make any scenes.

Months later, Kingsley gave birth. Unfortunately, there were some complications. Diane was born healthy, but Kingsley almost didn't make it. She had lost so much blood. The doctors managed to stabilize her, but she fell into a coma.

Donald was devastated. He fell into depression and couldn't even bring himself to take care of his newborn daughter. Fortunately, Mom Kwan and Dad Kwan were there to take care of their granddaughter.

Donald was a mess. He would barely eat, drink, and sleep. He'd just lay in bed and wallow in despair. This wasn't how things were supposed to go. Kingsley was supposed to be completely fine and they'd raise their daughter together and live happily ever after. Kingsley wasn't supposed to nearly die and then fall into a coma.

At first, Donald's friends and Kingsley's friends did their best to comfort and console Donald. But after a week, Myles got fed up with Donald's behavior and stormed into his room.

"Do you think she'd be happy with you neglecting your daughter!?" Myles snapped, kicking Donald off the bed.

"Don't act like you know how I feel!" Donald yelled back. "You'll never understand my pain!" He stood up and attempted to punch Myles.

Myles easily dodged. "Wow, when we fought before I didn't have enough time to even react and was mercilessly beaten to a pulp by you,"

"Shut up!" Donald attempted another attack, but got the same result.

"I don't like you," Myles flatly told him. "I only tolerate you because Kingsley loves you. But right now, I'm pissed off. You have a responsibility as a parent to take care of your daughter! Do you think you're the only one suffering? Think about how Kingsley's parents feel too! Their only child nearly died and is now comatose!"

"Diane mainly inherited Kingsley's looks," Donald said. "It hurts to look at her!"

"You know what it's like for your biological parents to not want you," Myles reminded. "Do you want your kid to feel the same way?"

That question stung Donald and he looked away. "No...I don't want her to feel unwanted. I...I do love my daughter,"

"Really?" Myles scoffed. "You haven't been acting like a loving father. If you aren't like your own biological parents, then prove it with your actions,"

Donald began to take responsibility. He was constantly afraid of messing up, but Kingsley's parents helped guide him.

A month later, Kingsley woke up. She was showered with hugs from her family and friends. Donald cried as he hugged her.

Kingsley held their daughter for the first time and cried tears of relief and joy. She cradled their daughter closely, as if she could disappear at any moment.

Kingsley's near death experience made Donald and Kingsley terrified. Sometimes they became paranoid that they'd lose each other or that both of them would die due to a tragic accident, such as during a drive, and that Diane would be left an orphan. Sometimes they just wanted to stay holed up in their home, protected from the harsh world.

But they knew that they'd overcome their fears together. They had each other. And the three of them would have a bright future together.

Thank you for reading One Night.

It took a while to write the final chapter because I didn't want to rush it and I wanted to have a hopeful feel at the end.

I had originally planned for Donald's fan club to find out that Kingsley was pregnant with Donald's child and attack Kingsley to try to cause a miscarriage. I decided to just skip to the childbirth and then cause angst with Kingsley almost dying.
