ch 5. The mall?

I'm lead around the institute by a girl a little younger than me named Jubilee. She shows me my classes, the kitchen, my room and more. We near the end of our tour as we reach the common room. My eyes light up as I see my friends from the Jet sitting on the couch and chairs. Jean and Scott sit together on the couch, jeans head resting on Scott's shoulder. Ororo sits in front of the tv, fiddling with a machine I believe is an Atari. My eyes light up as I see Kurt. He is sitting sideways in the chair, the red leather of his jacket and the chair complementing his blue skin. He's sipping tea being held up by his tail while he reads a book.

  "Guys! I just got through showing our new classmate around the place." She exclaims. Scott's face lights up.

  "Your staying?" He asks.

  "Y-yeah, I figured it was in my best interest."I answer.

  "Plus, I bet you want to learn more about your new friends huh?" Jubilee states playfully. I giggle.

  "That too." I answer with a smirk.

Scott fakes a yawn and stretches.

  "It's so boring here, I'm still full of adrenaline from our mission." He states. Jean slaps his arm playfully.

  "Oh shush summers." Jean says.

  "You know what? I think it's about time for a good old fashioned prison break." Scott says with a mischievous grin.

  "You know what I'm thinking?" Jubilee asks.

  "Mall trip!" They both shout in unison.

  "Ughh Scott but we just got back." Jean whines.

  "I'm sorry, but what's a mall?" As I ask that, all the attention in the small group is turned to me.

  "Yeah it's definitely time for a prison break." Jean answers. Ororo stands and stretches.

  "You guys can go ahead. I need some rest after detaining the carnival folk." She explains before heading out of the room.

  And so, we all make our way to the garage. We get into a red car with a white strip down the middle. Scott and jean in the front, Kurt, Jubilee and me in the back. I'm in the middle, between Kurt and Jubilee. As the car starts moving, i start to get nervous. I have no clue where we're going, and I'm letting these complete strangers take me wherever they want. What is happening?

  My rabbit ears pop out as my anxiety spikes. I start playing with the hem of my shorts and try to steady my breathing.

  "Rabbit ears? Those are so cute!" Jubilee exclaims. I look over at her quickly.

  "Th-thank you." I say with a quick smile.

  "So your a shape shifter?" Scott asks, looking at me in the rear view.

  "Y-yeah kind of." I answer. I know they're only curious but I'm really not in the mood to be asked these questions. I need to be somewhere quiet, somewhere I can get away from the world.

  Kurt looks over at me with a smile, but noticed my worried expression. He takes on an expression of worry as well and moves his hand to my back. He leans closer to me and talks in a quiet and soft voice.

  "It's ok. I didn't know what a mall was before I came here either. I understand it can feel overwhelming to be thrown into this life without warning, but I promise you will soon come to love it." I look into his eyes and see the same kindness I saw when he rescued me. I nod my head and feel the anxiety melt away. I shift back to normal as my anxiety subsides. Kurt moves his hand away and starts a conversation with Scott.

I put a hand over my heart. How did he calm me down so easily? Is that one of his powers? I mean he did say he can teleport "among other things". Maybe emotional manipulation? Maybe he's also a telepath? Maybe I could ask one of the others...

  We pull up to a giant building. My eyes widnen in amazement as the car pulls to a stop.

  "Alright guys! Let's get shopping!" Jubilee says, hoping out of the car. We enter the mall in a group. I look around at all of the signs to different shops, the bright clothes on mannequins, the large center fountain.

  "It's like a... A temple." I say as I walk with the others. Scott chuckles.

  "You sound like Kurt when we first brought him." The group comes to a stop in front of the fountain.

  "Ok so where does everyone want to go." Scott asks, bringing us all into a circle. Jubilee and Jean start listing off countless stores, most of them I don't even recognize. Kurt says he wants to go to the record store, the book store and a few other places. It's decided in the end that we will split up. Boys with boys, girls with girls. Jubilee, Jean and I wave goodbye to the boys. As we walk away Scott yells to meet at the food court in a few hours. Jean giggles and we head off to the first of what I assume to be dozens of stores.
