Prologue

It's said that a crazy person doesn't know their crazy.

Ask any crazy person in a mental institute and they'd say, 'I'm not crazy. I'm not even suppose to be here."

But what if a sane person -wrongly placed in an institute- is asked if they are crazy, they'd say. 'I'm not crazy. I'm not even suppose to be here."

Hi, I'm Carlie, and I'm not crazy. I'm not even suppose to be here.

Chapter 1

"That can't be good." I looked over at Mandy. She stared down at her thumb and finger tightly pressed together. "I just pulled out three eyelashes." She looked around the group, some of the girls from the institute gathered in the hall for 'bonding time'.

"People of my time use to say, you get a wish for each eyelash that falls out. You'll get three." Lucy smiled at Mandy. Lucy believed she was alive during world war 1. But I was very tolerant of crazy comments. Others weren't.

"Crazy b*tch. People of your time is US!" Mandy screamed. She snapped at odd times.

I got up and walked away, just as I expected Mandy lunged for Lucy. She bit and pulled hair, men in white grabbed them apart. I didn't look back, it was always the same here. But it was my last day. I was almost free.

I noticed the new girl in the corner, she watched the fight with horror filled eyes. I bent down the her level. She flinched, first days are hard.

"Hi. How you copping?" I asked in an offhand voice.

"There crazy!" She shivered. "Really crazy. I'm not crazy. Hell, I'm not even suppose to be here." She looked at me like she needed me to believe her. Like she needed a hero.

"Hey Lucy! You crazy?" I yelled across the room to her.

"No, I shouldn't be here." She called back as she tried to untangle her hair from Mandy's necklace, Mandy glared fiercely as Lucy told war stories of how she died.

New girl looked on in disbelief. I lowered my voice. "You wanna know the big secret? Every crazy person believes there sane. Every sane person believes there sane. But in the middle of the night, all the screaming of 'I'm sain' can't save you cause you know what? All the crazies will be shouting it too." I finished with a harsh smile.

Something like anger flashed in her eyes. "So are you sane?" She asked, good- you need some fight to survive in this place.

"Nope." I said popping the 'p'. "Crazy as a Mad Hatter." I said with a cheeky grin. She gapped, taken by surprise.

"But you said crazy people say there sane and sane people say their sane!" She said in an outraged voice.

"It's my automatic response. If everyone thinks their sane, they act like any sane person would around crazy people. If I say I'm crazy, people give you respect...and space. Mainly the space." I chuckled and a smile twitched at her lips. "By the way this is my last day." I said causally.

"Why?" She sounded like I took her safety blanket away.

"I'm sane."

"You said you were crazy!" She squeaked.

"By saying I'm crazy. I acknowledge that since I'm here I may be crazy, therefore I'm sane." I said grinning at her face, all confused. Ahhh I was going to miss messing with the new girls. It's the little things in life. "Bye." I got up and almost walked away when I heard her voice.

"Dose that mean I'm insane?" She asked in a small voice. I looked her over.

"No, I don't thinks so. But crazy is infectious, give it long enough and you'll be there." I said slowly.

"But your not crazy! I could be like you and get out okay." I hated to squash hope. I walked away backwards.

"Now Alice." I said doing my best Mad Hatter impression. I took off my invisible hat and bowed down to her. "How about some tea?" I said loudly, grinning my best crazy grin. My voice lowered till only she could hear it. "No one gets out 'okay'" I said coldly and left her.

She looked like she need a hero, but I was the best she got. It's up to her now. No one was there for me, and I turned out fine...ish.
