As Cho settles back down into the bundle of sheets and blankets we count as a bed, Satoshi's eyes open up, probably woken by his younger sisters constant movements. He has long eyelashes... We all do... Another amazing trait passed down by my mother.
By seeing the look on my face and by looking at Cho's face and movemets, he puts two and two together and then gives me a look of pitty... He so mature for his age.... It's truly sad when sittuations cause children to grow up to fast....
He sits up a bit and looks from his younger sibling, to me once again. "Akemi...?" He says quietly. "Yeah?" I reply in a whisper looking at him gently. "What's the schedule like for today?" He asks, tilting his head, eyes wide with wonder. I can almost see the gears cranking, hungry for new knoledge.
"Um.. I-I really don't know..." I say, still a little brain dead from just waking up. I feel a little unconfortable when the brightness in his eyes and face fade. He sometimes makes me feel like the younger one...
I quickly try and think of something. I don't want to ruin his whole morning... And it will be good to come up with a plan anyway.
"Well... We need to eat first... I know i'm starving..." I say and nod a little, talking to mostly myself at the moment. "All the canned food is... gone... and so is everything in the fridge..." I say quietly.
All of a sudden, Cho starts making little huffing noises. Fake crying. We all did it. You can always tell the differance between kids fake crying for something they want, vs., kids crying because they are hurt... Well, etheir way, I always try and help. Even though the constant pattern of, "I want ___", sniffling, and a short session of sobs and possibly screams an maybe pounding or throwing objects tends to make people want to rip out thier hair and quite possibly the children's hair as well. If they haven't already done so themselves.
"What'll we do theeeennnn??!!!" Cho wails. Both me and Satoshi reach out to put a warning finger over her lips.
"I'll get you you food I promise!" I whisper so hopefully she'll catch on. And she does after slapping her older brother hand away and folding her arms. (You know how fast kids can stop fake crying after they get what they want...)Satoshi gives me a look of hopelessness and nibbles on his lip. "But... what will we do...?" He says quietly, asking the question again.
I sit there a minute and think a while as the two children stare me down. "Well... I guess there's only one thing to do...." I sigh and look up at them.
Satoshi nods quickly. That's him telling me to give him information. I roll my eyes a bit before continuing. I don't really feel like telling him how despreate we really are.
"We obviosbly can't and won't, steal food or money." I start. Cho smiles, happy that we're making "good choices," as my mom would say it.
"And... we're out of food unless we want to be living off alchohol like dad... seeing that alchohol is the only thing avalible in this bloody house at the moment." I say a little frusterated, glancing at the stack of empty aluminum cans in the corner. Satoshi sighs a bit and folds his arms.
A memory suddenly floods into my head. I see mom, handing me some money. "Only use this for emergencies... She cautions. I take the money hesitantly. The memory fades. I remeber putting that money up in my closet. I never told anyone about it. Not even the kids. I stand up, Satoshi and Cho watch curiously. I reach for the top shelf and take down a small dusty box, and open it. Inside rests a roll of Euros. Beside it is a sticky note with my old handwritting reading "Only for emergenices." I suppose this is an emergency... We're out of food... I bite my lip and turn back towards my siblings.
"Lets go..." I take out the Euros and hold them up a bit, so the kids can see. Cho gasps. "Where'd that come from?" She asks. "Um... I saved it." I say. Cho stands up. "Get your shoes on..." I tell her before she goes to grab them in the closet. Satoshi walks over to me and raises an eyebrow. "So... Why are you remembering that just now?" He asks. I'm really lazy when it comes to explaining things. Probably because i'm no good at it and then I always have to re-phrase somehow. I shrug and hand him the sticky note. He reads it and nods, then hands it back.
We get ready to leave. "Just because I have money, doesn't mean that we can waste it away. We need to use it sparingly." I say. They both nod, then I do too. I open the door to our room as quietly as I can... Empty bottles and cans slide across the ground creating a bit of noise. I grimace and look around. My father is laying sprawled across the couch, bottle held losely in his hand. I'm almost relieved. I turn to Cho and put a finger to my lips. She copies me and nods. We shuffle towards the back door, avoiding the trash litterd everywhere.
At one point, Dad moves a little and groans. We freeze and hold our breath. After a few seconds, Dad goes still again, deep in a drunken sleep. We hurry out as soon as possible. I don't even realize how badly i'm shaking until Satoshi grabs my hand. He does that when i'm shaky. I plaster on a fake smile and look at Cho. Good job. She smiles, then jumps down the back porch steps. "Lets go eat!" She says.
We walk down to the McDonalds... Yeah it's cheap and not all that healthy, but we don't go out to eat hardly ever. I wanted to give the kids and even myself a little bit of a break from eating off the floor. Litterally.
Once we get inside, we go get into line. People stare at us. Probably because we're not the cleanest kids on the plannet. Cho dosen't much notice, because she's to busy oggling at the small plastic toys that come with the childrens meals. Satoshi notices, as usual. But he pretends not to notice... I can still see the hurt in his eyes though.
We get to the front of the line and I order all of us Happy Meals... I pay 12 Euros for the food and we go get our drinks, then sit down. My siblings look quite happy. I let Cho go and play on the playground while our food is made.
When the food is done Cho joins me and Satoshi. "Thanks Akemi!" They both say and dig in. I do too. I can almost taste all the fat in the nuggets i'm eating... That's okay. I kind of need it. The food is warm and savory... The best i've had in a long time.
I look at my siblings. Cho is busy playing with her new little toy minion. I've seen them around from the new movie, but I haven't seen it yet of course. Satoshi is slowly eating, taking care of each bite like it might be his last... They're almost glowing. They seem happy and healthy all of a sudden. I wish everday could be this way... You can't have everything you wish for.
