Maybe fate has always had a way of catching up to you? That's a question that has been going through the mind of Rebekah Pierce, who became the chosen one on her 16th birthday in June. It is now her first day in Junior year and she can't stop thinking 'what if things had ended up different?'
She sighs as she puts on her leather jacket while looking in the mirror. Anxious for another monster to show up in Shadowlake. Her girlfriend was meant to pick her up with her mom but she hasn't turned up yet. "Maybe death won't catch me today." Rebekah says to herself then she grabs her stake then she puts it in her school bag. Then she walks out of her room.
Rebekah goes over to her front door. She turns her head around and says "Bye mom!" Then Louisa's mom beeps her horn so Rebekah goes out of the house. She gets in the car. "Hey guys." Rebekah says as she puts her seatbelt on.
Mrs Gilbert looks in the mirror and asks "All ready for a new year?"
She's not ready because of her new duty she has to carry out but she lies to keep her secret hidden "All ready! Just hope me and Lou have a better year this year."
Louisa holds onto Rebekah's hand and smiles "Me too babe!"
Then her phone pings so she takes it out of her pocket. Rebekah turns it on and it shows a text from an unknown number which makes her heart drop. Good job there is a stake ready to be used in action in her bag. Last night she heard something go bump in her room. She spent an hour in bed clutching onto her stake, ready to use in self defence. Once the noise went she put her stake away.
"Everything okay Rebekah?" Louisa asks.
"Everything's fine." Rebekah says with a fake smile.
She looks back at her phone and looks at the message again. It reads...
'Be careful of the things that go bump in the night. It may scare you. It may curse you.'
Rebekah quickly puts her phone in her bag and looks out of the window. Trying to spot anybody who looks like a demon or a vampire. Since the night of her birthday she has been the girl who hangs out in cemeteries and keeps secrets from everyone she loves. From her parents to Louisa. It has hurt her to keep this big of a secret from everyone but it was advised to do so by her watcher.
Louisa looks at Rebekah with a worried look as she now knows something is up. She has had a suspicion that something has been up but she didn't want to assume and upset Rebekah. So she asks again "Are you sure everything's fine?"
"Yeah, I'm just nervous for school that's all." Rebekah smiles. Mrs Gilbert pulls up outside of the school. So the two girls get their bags and make their way out of the car.
Mrs Gilbert opens up the passenger window and shouts "Have a good day girls!" Then she drives off. The girls walk towards the entrance of Shadowlake High. Rebekah senses someone watching her so she looks behind her. Her heart rate rising and her mind starting to race. She sees no one so she shakes her head and walks more towards the entrance of the school.
Louisa and Rebekah reach their lockers as they have lockers next to each other. Louisa laughs and says "Summer feels like a fever dream now."
"It sure does!" Rebekah says as she puts her books into her locker. She sighs and continues "I just can't believe we have to be back at this hellhole!"
"Haha, I know right. But we can get through the hellhole together." Louisa says and then she asks "Right?"
"Till the bitter end!" Rebekah flaunts and then her stake falls out of her bag. She rushes down to pick it up and looks up at Louisa. She asks "You are probably wondering what I'm doing with a stake, huh?"
"Yeah." Louisa answers and then she asks "What are you doing with a stake?"
Rebekah gets back up and puts the stake back into her bag. "I was thinking of dressing up as Buffy for halloween, so I thought I'd prepare early." she says to Louisa. She hates keeping secrets from her girlfriend when they used to be so open with each other. But now things have changed and Louisa is better off not knowing anything. Otherwise she'll be dead.
"I should've known, you love to be prepared!" Louisa smiles and then the two girls hold hands and set off to class.

After school, while everyone else goes home and watches TV while gossiping with their best friends about the boys and girls they have crushes on, Rebekah has to go and have a meeting with the watcher. To tell her about the duties she has to carry out tonight. She walks into his office which is across the road from the school.
His office is full of books about the lore of Shadowlake and the monsters that once occupied this town. "Hello, mister!" Rebekah says with a smile as she sits on the chair.
"Hey, Rebekah! Ready for another night of slaying?" He asks with a smile on his face.
"Ugh," Rebekah groans and asks "do I ever get a night off?"
The Watcher laughs and says "You know the regulations. No night's off."
Rebekah rolls her eyes with a smile. She'd love to be at home right now watching tv and listening to music. But she can't be a normal teenager. Not anymore and that hurts her. Now she's got the worry of the text she got sent this morning. She gets her phone out and opens up the text. "Greg, I received this text and I want your opinion of it." Rebekah says and then she passes her phone over to Greg, who is her watcher.
Greg reads the text with frowned eyebrows and he passes the phone back to Rebekah. He puts his glasses back on and says "It sounds quite threatening. I'd be very careful tonight."
Rebekah takes a quick breath and then she says "Okay, I will. What's my task?"
"There's a vampire in town thinking he knows it all. I want you to slay him as he poses a danger to Shadowlake." Greg, her watcher explains.
Rebekah asks "What does he look like?"
"A leather jacket and blonde hair. You won't miss him, he looks quite old." Greg explains. Rebekah laughs at his last comment which makes him shake his head at her. She then grabs her bag and gets up from the chair.
Rebekah walks out of his office with the task in mind. Even though she'd prefer to be on a date with Louisa. She looks at the time on her phone; 15:56. "A couple of hours till showtime!" Rebekah sighs then she puts her phone back in her pocket.
At home, Josie, her mom, is in the kitchen preparing dinner. She looks up and asks "How was school darling?"
"It was good. Sucked as always but it was good." Rebekah smiles.
Josie laughs and says "Of course!"
