Last month, when James left with his new family, nothing changed here, it was still the same old since I was 2 and I wonder if it'd be the same if I left: not once was his name mentioned again, no one was affected or upset by his sudden departure, everything had been like he had never been here.

It's my birthday today, January 1st, and it's also the new year (we don't celebrate anything here so it's nothing special to us), and today I plan to run away from this place. I'm sick of this place; I hate this children's home. I hate being an orphan. And I hate not having a family.

No one wants me. They say that I'm an oddity. That I'm a freak. A monstrosity. That I'm cursed. What if I am? What if I am cursed?

For years, for as long as I can remember, Ree and I had been outcasts in this place. More so I than her.

So I made my decision to run away today. Today, will be the day, I run away and never come back.

I had been planning that since my fifth birthday. How I'd run away without getting caught, perfecting every step of the plan possible with help from Serene.

There's a knock.

And another knock.

Until the door bursts open, and in runs Ree, waking me from my trance and waking my new roommate, Naala (pronounced Nar-la).

"Happy 8th Birthday, Ann! Oh, I'm going to miss you!" she yelled in my ears as she attacked me in a massive hug, making me fall from the thin, almost non-existent window sill that I was perched upon.

"Ow! My ears! You couldn't yell any louder, could you?" I groaned as I rubbed my ears and my bottom because I had fallen on it.

"Sorry. I'm just so excited!" she screamed, jumping up and down, receiving a glare from Naala. "Sorry."

She turned to face me again after apologising sheepishly to Naala and continued, "Oh I can't believe that today is the day! I know how long you've be..."

"You know what, I am leaving this room and complaining to Matron. I can't believe that I have to share this room with such a freak like you." Naala snarled at us, "In fact, I'm not going anywhere. I'll make Matron kick you out. Anyways, no one wants you, just give up already and leave before I force you to. I would prefer to spend my last days here in peace, away from monstrosities like you. One more day and I'll be with my new family. And guess what, they're rich, so I can get whatever I want, unlike you, freak." she spat.

She got up and stormed out yelling, "Oh, and whatever your name is, Dumb-mare-piss..."

"Serene Damaris."

"Whatever Duck-marbles, I warn you, I heard that whatever that freak is cursed with, is catchable, don't spend too long, or any time with her at all for that matter, if you want to remain normal! Or did she already curse you? I spent one night in there and already I feel like I'm going insane!" she stuck her head in through the doorway and snared before spitting on the floor and slamming the door shut, storming off grumbling the words 'useless piece of vermin that freak', the door blocking anything she grumbled afterwards.

"I'm so sorry Anna." Serene whispered, looking at the floor, scratching the back of her neck.

"Don't be, she is just my temporary roomie, anyways, I'll be gone before they even know it." I replied, glancing out of the window.

The streets were bustling: the car engines roaring, people talking, children playing...

The girls and boys are laughing and playing together outside of the window. Not in here though. That's not allowed.
