Author's notes.

Sexual content warning. Although not very explicit, and mostly in the dialog. (If it needs additional warnings, please let me know.)

A follow-up to "Tobio's Girl." It might be hard to understand without reading that one first.

It adds some bits to their story, but it's not so relevant that you need to know it to read "Tobio's Girl. Time Skip." (I will upload that soon.)

Reina checked herself in the mirror. Cute enough, and maybe I won't melt down in this heat. Summer in Japan could be demanding, and it was mid-August. Although she was ready to leave, she sat down for a moment and took out her phone. She still had some time to spare, and she wanted to write to Tobio.

"I just checked the news. Congrats on winning your first international match last night!"

"Thanks."

"How was it? Did you get a lot of play time?"

"Almost as much as Miya-san. It wasn't that difficult to win. Tonight might be tougher."

"Fighting!"

"And what's up with you?"

"I am going out with the girls today. We have the whole day planned."

"It seems you girls always go out to play."

"Not always. But it's a special occasion after all."

"Special occasion? We're going to a team meeting. I'll write later."

So he didn't remember. Reina signed. Then she looked into the mirror once more, glued a cheerful smile on her face, and went out to see her friends.

"Reina, happy birthday!" The girls greeted her excitedly. "Let's go and have some fun!"

"Umm, let's do that." Reina did her best to enjoy celebrating. But she couldn't stop herself from checking her phone way too frequently till the evening. She received many phone calls and messages, but not from Tobio.

I will not get upset. I will not get upset...

It was the first time he was representing Japan abroad. Asian U19 Championship. She shouldn't be surprised he ignored what else was special about the date. Surely, she could cut him some slack.

I will not get upset...

Besides, he didn't celebrate with her last year either. In the summertime, he was usually away at some training camp or something. A generic happy birthday message was the most she could expect this year as well.

I will not get upset with him...

The first thing she did the next day was to check the highlights from the championship. The time difference made it difficult to follow live. Reina was excited to see that they won again. She grabbed her phone to congratulate Tobio but hesitated when she saw that he didn't write anything for her birthday after all. Should she just ignore it and write to him as usual? Suddenly her phone ringed. A video call... from Kageyama?! She nervously smoothed up her hair and answered it.

"Hi, Tobio."

"Hi..." He seemed troubled. Was it about the match? But they won...

"So unusual for you to call me. Actually, I was just checking your last match and—"

"I'm sorry." He bowed his head in remorse. "About forgetting your birthday. I only realized this today. Somehow I missed the notification. Anyway, I wanted to apologize."
