I blinked open my eyes and groaned.
"Ugh." I said, I felt super disoriented. I made sure to stand up slowly so I didn't get dizzy and put a hand to my head.
"Good, you're awake." A loud ringing voice said. I blinked and looked around.
"Not again." I said, looking around for the location of that strange voice. I tried to get my bearings. I was on a green grassy hill, and there was a single house in the distance. Squinting my eyes in the sun, I noticed the house was big and white.
"You know you want to go to the house, Rosie." The voice boomed. It seemed to be coming from everywhere at once. I let out a groan of displeasure.
"You know, Mr. Loud voice, you're getting on my nerves." I said in dissatisfaction and started towards the White House. I might be going crazy but maybe some civilization would help. Cautiously, I went down the green grassy hill, making sure I had footholds so as not to fall down. Slowly but surely, I made it to the bottom of the hill and let out a sigh of contempt.
"Good job!, Although you were very slow, slow and steady wins the race." I rolled my eyes at the voice and sauntered off. For some reason, it felt as if the house got farther and farther back the more I walked. Maybe I really was going crazy. To prove myself wrong, I took off into a sprint, and soon the house was right upon me. It looked much bigger up close than it did from afar.
"You've got spirit," the voice said. "Although the task seemed rough, you didn't give up and tried a new way to achieve it. " it said. At this point, I was super tired of the voice and simply chose to ignore it. The front door to the house opened as I approached the steps, and a very old woman stepped out. Her cane made little tapping sounds, and she walked across her porch towards me."Welcome, dear one!" she said and spread her arms out as if to hug me. I looked her up and down, surprised she didn't fall over as she had nothing supporting her. I walked to her, unsure what to do. Slowly and awkwardly, I caught my breath as the little old woman sat there holding her arms spread out.
"Well, what are you waiting for? Give the woman a hug." The loud ominous voice said. Rolling my eyes, I stepped into her arms. I let out a grunt of surprise at her strength. Perhaps there was more to this little old lady than what showed on the surface. "Oh, where are my manners." She giggled to herself like a little girl. "Do come in Rosie, come in." She said, gesturing towards the door. I walked inside with the lady following. As I stepped inside, I could instantly feel the warmth of love, but something also felt very off. The lady followed me inside and shut the door behind her with a thud. I almost jumped but chastised myself. There was no need to be scared, or was there?
"Oh, you found another stray." A boy said as he walked into the room. He looked vaguely familiar, but because of the fireplace in the living room being the only light source, I couldn't distinguish his features all that well. I looked around the dimly lit room as the old lady and the young boy talked. There was a big leather couch in front of the fireplace. There seemed to be tinsel or garland around the hearth of the fireplace. I was surprised it wasn't catching on fire. The floor was a brown hardwood with many carpets laid out and about to make the room more comfy. Several pillows were set out and around the floor for what I assumed was for sitting on. I walked over to the window and noticed a light frost on the window. But wasn't it just sunny, hot, and noon? I thought.
"Would you like some hot chocolate?" Asked the young boy. I didn't realize how cold I was until he put the warm cup in my hands. I lost my train of thought and drank some of the hot chocolate.
"Wow, this is really good." I told him. He let out a small smile.
"Do sit down. We don't have company very often." He said. He walked over to the couch, and I followed behind him dizzily. I wasn't feeling so well. He patted the seat next to him, and I sat down.
"So Rosie, what are you doing here?" He asked. There was that tingling sensation in my brain again, as if something was off, but once again, I ignored it. I tried to think back to how I got here but couldn't remember. Anytime I tried to recall a memory, it seemed as if my brain suddenly became super foggy.
" I don't know." I trailed off, looking into my hot chocolate." What was I doing here? I shook my head. Suddenly, something was clear to me.
"Wait, how do you both know my name?" I asked him. He blinked rapidly like a deer caught in headlights.
"You told me it, or my grandmother told me it." He said. I shook my head, I wasn't one to give out my name to strangers. I stood up rapidly and slammed down the hot chocolate so hard it sloshed out onto the coffee table to the side of the couch.
"I never told either of you my name." I said. He stood up and looked me in the eyes. They seemed to glaze over as he began to speak.
"You told me your name." He said in a smooth voice. For a second, my brain became foggy again. As if someone was trying to rewrite my memories. I quickly shook my head and slapped the boy.
"No!" shouted and ran out of the room trying to find the front door. Finally, I found the front door and ran out into the freezing cold. As if by instinct, I seemed to shift into something else. I looked down in surprise as I saw paws attached to black fur with a few white streaks. I screamed in confusion, but in my ears, it sounded like a howl.
"After her! " The old lady yelled from the porch. I didn't have time to think about how I became an animal, I had to get out of here. I took off running on my four paws and crashed into a wall. As I blinked, trying once again to get my bearings as I was suddenly in a white room, a shadow came over me.
"At last, I finally know why you're here, Rosie Stevens." The voice said, I looked up in human form again.
"Dad?" I asked the man hovering over me in surprise. "You're still alive?"
He shook his head, "Much as you would like that, I am something else in general." He smiled."I am the light."
