When John awoke, it was unlike anywhere he could remember waking in a long time, surrounded by monitors that beeped and charts and IV tubes.
A nurse appeared around the corner right at the time he woke up. "You're awake!" she said. She called Megan and Ryan in.
"What happened?" John replied.
"You were in a car accident," the nurse said, "and you slipped into a coma."
"For five years?"
The nurse laughed. "Where did that come from? No, thankfully not. Only for a few months, which isn't a long time if you consider how long you could have been under, compared to other cases."
John caught Megan's eyes and she smiled at him. "Glad to see you're okay," she said, patting his arm. John chuckled to himself.
"What's so funny, Daddy?" Ryan asked.
"Well son," John began. "I dreamt your mother was about to pull the plug on me." Megan rolled her eyes dramatically, smirking at him. And so as not to stop there, John went into all the details about the dream.
While Ryan, and even Megan, laughed at some of the things John mentioned about the dream, the nurse looked very grim-faced and somber. "You say you remember the accident?" she asked.
"Well, yeah. And I knew in my dream that I had suffered some head trauma. And that I was in a coma. I just didn't know how long I had been out of it."
"Hm," the nurse replied, and left the room.
"That sounds like an exciting dream, John." Megan said. "You really should write all the details out before you forget anything. I bet it would make for an interesting story. That's what you should do, turn it into one of those short stories that you're always writing."
So he did.
