Roman
I swallow the big fat lump in my throat slowly with struggle. "H-h-huh?" I shake.
Clark nods and grabs a glass from the cobert. "I've been meaning to bring you back sooner. The pack misses you and now that you have a mate, they might forgive you."
"Forgive me?" I ask him.
Clark nods, itching his elbow, "yeah, you didn't know?" I shake my head and he continues. "You're dad collapsed five weeks ago, and you haven't returned to become their Alpha. They're pretty pissed." My mouth hangs open.
"The fuck?" the words slip. "Why didn't anyone contact me? Don't they know that I'm just at my house?" Stupid wolfs, they could have used the link.
Carter rolls his eyes, not seeming to be sad about the news. "You closed off their links, remember?" He asks and it finally clicks. I did close them off, saying that I needed my space. But they could have at least called or visited me!?
Taking a deep breath, I gently close my eyes to control my wolf and myself. "I can't just randomly pop up with Lacey-"
"Sure you can!" Lacey appears excitedly, her hair still damp from her shower and- holy fuck, where are her clothes!?
I look beside me and see Clark's eyes shinning brightly with what I know is lust. His mouth is agape and he stares shockingly towards my Mate.
"Clark!" I shout and receive his full attention, his cheeks blushing. "That's another reason why I don't want to bring her. I haven't gotten the chance to mark her yet, and she won't let me anytime soon. Everyone will be around her." I explain worriedly, looking from Lacey to Clark. "Could you go put some clothes on?" I beg and she leaves a long sigh.
Clark faces me, his eyes still wide. "Whoa," he breathes, "she's beautiful with just a towel on." But she's also mine.
Kill him, kill him now. Nobody is allowed to stare at our Mate that way. My wolf persuades me, but I don't give a second thought before ignoring him. The guy's a grump, I don't even like him and he's a part of me.
"So, what do you say?" Clark snaps me out of my thoughts, going back to our previous conversation.
I hold my breath for a second. "... Fine..."
* * *
"How does it feel, Roman? Going back to your home and all." Lacey asks beside me, sipping on her slushy that I bought for our trip. She doesn't like normal food, but she really likes those. She only gets the red kind though...
"Oh, uh, good." I lie, adding some speed for the car.
Lacey makes an 'ugh!" sound. "You know I can read your mind?" She exaggerates.
I roll my eyes lightly, " then why did you ask me?"
She doesn't answer and goes back to slurping.
Awkward. Can one of us talk? Should I turn on the radio? Should I hold her hand? No I shouldn't, I don't want to lose a finger.
"Well..." I trail off and immediately scold myself for speaking. She's angry now, this won't go good.
To my surprise, she doesn't answer either. Her eyes still stare out to the window, a glossy look mixing in with them. She seems to be in her own world. She couldn't look any more beautiful.
"Roman," Lacey speaks, and something inside of me begins to heat up. "I've never had a life. It was always kill and drink, kill and drink for me. I'd find a body and have sex with them, later drinking from them and burning their body. Never once have I felt sorry for them, because that was my nature. My family was a screw-up, I hardly knew them personally. And I never got to leave the palace, because I was special and needed to stay safe. But I wasn't. I never knew any kind of emotion, only sadness, before I decided to leave them all and become numb. One day, I escaped. And that's how I met you..." Her voice lowers and my heart beats faster. "Maybe it was faith because on that same night that I left, was the night that you, Roman, left the pack. And that same night where we met at the club." She finishes, not even a tear shedding. I guess she can't because she doesn't drink water. Her eyes close and I try to say something, anything but nothing leaves my dried throat. When I think she's fallen asleep, she surprises me by saying softly with her eyes closed, "thank you, Roman. I've finally found myself... all by finding you."
I love you, Lacey.
