Across the lake was where I felt at home. Coming from a big town filled with constant chatter to a small community of people, it was a welcome change. It had always been my dream to find peace with the world, to live life on my terms, without feeling judged. Here, I could finally do what I wanted, whenever I wanted.

Lying in the grass, I gazed at the glistening sun overhead. The afternoon breeze drifted through the air, carrying the scent of pine and fresh water. Time seemed to slow here, each second stretching out like a gift. There was so much to explore, so many new things to see and discover.

From a distance, I heard the crackling of bonfires being set up in the nearby forest. The sound was comforting, like a melody that told me I was home. It was my first day here, and already I felt a sense of belonging. The gentle flow of the water and the rustling of the trees became the soundtrack of my new life. I was a nature girl at heart, and this was everything I had dreamed of.

Just then, I heard my name being called. "Blaire!" My mom's voice broke through my thoughts, and I turned to see her walking toward me with a warm smile.

I sat up, brushing the grass off my clothes. "Anything you need?"

"We're having dinner outside tonight," she said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"Outside!?" My face lit up. "That sounds amazing!"

She laughed softly, pleased with my enthusiasm. "I thought you'd like that. I've been chatting with some of the families in the area."

At the mention of the neighbors, my curiosity piqued. I loved meeting new people, especially in a place like this. I jumped to my feet and hurried to join the gathering.

"Hi! My name's Blaire, it's really nice to meet you all!" I said brightly, greeting a small group of families as my mom caught up to me.

"Having fun?" she asked, and I grinned in response.

"It's really fun!" I replied, though my eyes darted around, looking for my dad and Claire.

When I didn't see them, I excused myself and went back inside the cabin.

"Hey, Claire, why aren't you coming out?" I asked, finding her curled up in the living room with a book in her hands.

"I'm really into this," she replied without looking up. "You know me, I always love a good romance."

I smiled, leaning over to get a glimpse of the cover. "I hope you enjoy it! Come out whenever you're ready," I said, giving her a quick hug before heading to find Dad.

He was in the kitchen, staring out the window with a distant look in his eyes.

"You're not joining us outside?" I asked softly.

He shook his head, his expression unreadable. "Not tonight. You go have fun."

Something about his tone made my chest tighten, but I didn't press. Instead, I gave him a small smile and walked back outside.

The moment I stepped out, someone ran up to me with a wide grin. "Hey, my name's Paige! I heard you're new here."

Her bubbly energy was contagious, and I couldn't help but smile back. "I'm Blaire. It's nice to meet you!"

Paige tucked a strand of her blonde hair behind her ear. "I really hope we get to be friends. It's always nice to have someone to talk to."

"That sounds fun! I'd love that," I said, eager to connect.

"I'll see you around," she said with a wave, her bright smile lingering in my mind as she walked away.

For a moment, I stood there, replaying the brief conversation in my head. Then I turned back to join my family at the table.

"Welcome back!" they said in unison as I returned, and a wave of happiness washed over me.

"It's really nice to be back," I replied, sitting down to share the meal with them.

As the sun began to set, painting the sky in hues of gold and crimson, I couldn't resist running to the lake. The view was breathtaking, more beautiful than I could have imagined. The water reflected the colors of the sky like a mirror, and I stood there, mesmerized.

When the sun finally dipped below the horizon and the stars began to shine, Paige appeared beside me, her footsteps soft against the grass.

"Looks great, doesn't it?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

I nodded. "It's amazing."

She hesitated, her gaze fixed on the water. "Do you like it here?"

"I do," I said, sensing there was more she wanted to say. "Are you okay?"

"Yeah," she replied quickly, though her smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "I'm just... a little introverted, that's all."

I smiled, trying to put her at ease. "Take your time. No need to rush."

Her expression softened, and she gave me a small smile. "Thanks. I'll talk to you later."

"Talk to you later," I echoed, watching as she walked away.

The night air grew cooler, and I finally made my way back to the cabin. Inside, I heard my parents talking quietly in their room, while Claire was still in the living room, lost in her book.

"You're really enjoying that, huh?" I teased, pausing on my way to my room.

She smiled without looking up. "It's a really good story. I can't put it down."

"I'm glad you're having fun," I said with a grin before heading to my room.

Once inside, I grabbed my guitar and started to play. Music had always been my escape, a way to express what I couldn't put into words. The melody I played was soft and wistful, reflecting the emotions stirring inside me.

As the notes filled the room, I thought about the day I'd just had, the new faces, the beauty of the lake, and the unspoken weight in my dad's eyes. It was a lot to take in, but for the first time in a long while, I felt hopeful.

Tomorrow was a new day, and I was ready to embrace it.
