After lunch, they went their separate ways. Efe and Kadir were returning to the boat to make their routine check of everything. It was important to keep all the parts of a boat in proper working order if they were to head out In a few days. They had just came through a storm and Efe was anxious to check all the rigging.
Carolina had wanted to make that call to her dad on her own. She knew there would be a argument and she didn't want Efe to witness the stubbornness of her father. As she sat there on the bed holding her phone in her hand, all the things that she had told her dad before she came to Sardinia flooded her mind. She had promised him she would not do anything foolish, she would not go looking for someone to ease the pain of what Grant had done to her. And she knew he would think that is just what she had done, but in reality it wasn't at all what she had done.
Efe was nothing like Grant. He was kind, confident, and knew actually what he wanted. Those were traits that Grant had never possessed. So her dad should be happy for her that she had found someone she could trust. But that would be in a perfect world. He was still her father and she was his only daughter, so she knew he would be hard to convince.
She took a deep breath before pushing that button to call her dad, bracing herself for what was to come..
Efe and Kadir were busy checking all the ropes and rigging on the mast. But Kadir could tell that his brother was preoccupied, " Abi, when do you think we are going to shove off? If it's soon, like in the next day or two, then we need to talk about our living arrangements in the cabin. I'm sure that Carolina will want to have your privacy down below. So should I plan on sleeping up her on the deck if the weather permits.?" He asked, waiting for an answer. Efe had been so involved with his thoughts of Carolina and the way she seemed to want to avoid calling her dad, that he hadn't heard his brother, " Efe, hey can you not hear me. When do you want to leave." He asked again,
Efe looked around at his brother, " Oh I don't know, probably in a couple of days. We have to check the weather to make sure there aren't any storms headed our way. And we have to see what Carolinas' dad is going to say." He muttered, his eyes full of that doubt.
Kadir squinted his eyes at him, " What does that mean. Do you think he will forbid her to go with us. Abi, I don't see Carolina letting her parents dictate to her." He stated, shaking his head.
Efe smiled, " I hope not, but she was hesitant about calling her dad, and when I offered to stay and talk to him she nearly panicked, saying she had to do this on her own. So what am I suppose to think?" He spoke, busying his hands with checking the ropes. His heart was already in a turmoil, so keeping his hands busy was the best bet.
Efe wondered how long he should give her before walking back to her apartment. He wanted to be there right then, to help her, to support her as she made that call. He would do anything for her, and if that meant taking a butt chewing from her father, then so be it.
The time was ticking by. It had been two hours since he had left Carolinas apartment and there hadn't been a word from her. He was beginning to worry. Kadir was taking inventory of supplies down below, so he took advantage of his time alone to give her a call.
On the fourth ring she declined the call. His heart dropped, as the phone went dead. His mind was full of negative thoughts, but most of all his head was full of fear. He yelled out to Kadir below, " Hey kid, I'm heading back to Carolina's, can you take care of stocking the boat?" Kadir poked his head out, looking up the stairs, " Sure, but what happened. Why can't you just call her?"
Efe hung his head, " Can you just do as I asked, do you always need to know the reason?" He spewed with anger. Kadir held up his hands, " Ok, ok. I'll take care of it. What kind of food does Carolina like so I can pick her favorites up too." He asked. Efe whirled around to face his brother, " Just get the basics right now. I need to find out what's going on" He replied.
Kadir nodded, knowing not to push any harder. He knew something wasn't right as he watched his brother hop over the side railing of the deck and walk down the pier toward Carolinas apartment.
Carolina had just hung up with her dad, and his words were exploding like thunder inside her head. The phone call had not gone as she had hoped, as she relived the conversation.
" Carolina, what do you mean you have met someone. I thought you went there to clear your head, and to have an experience. Isn't that what you told me?" Her dad questioned. Before allowing her to answer he went on. " We agreed, you would concentrate on work and making money for your final year of the university. And now you tell me you met a guy. Well you can just forget about that." Her dad said.
Adam Munro was one of those fathers that expected the word of his daughter to be just that, the word of his daughter. He was strict, and even more so after the event that nearly broke her. Grant Baxter had almost ruined his only daughter, and he vowed he would not let that happen again.
" Now just get any notion of this boy out of your mind and get on with your work. You have a little over a month before you leave there and come home, so just think about that." Her father said, being as firm as possible.
Carolina felt the world being ripped away from her as she listened to her father. " But dad, he isn't just some boy. He is a very smart and confident man, and on the brink of becoming a very successful business man." She blurted out, defending Efe as vigorously as she could. " Dad he is wonderful, thoughtful, beautiful and I love him completely. If you would just trust me." She announced, changing her voice from asking to telling.
" Dad, I love him. Do you understand, I love him. I want to go with him,...and I think that's what I'm going to do. Please give me your blessing." She begged, feeling her heart being pulled in every direction.
Her father took a deep breath, " Carolina, you will not go with this man. Do you understand me. And where would you go anyway. Isn't he from Sardinia." He asked, confused at what she was saying.
Carolina smiled slightly, " No daddy, he is from Spain, his name is Efe Divit and he is the son of a wealthy and world known photographer and his mother is a bestselling author. Their family is famous, and rich." She stated, feeling proud of this man she loved. " And he's a sailor. Him and his younger brother are sailing the Mediterranean Sea for a while before he settles down to work." She tried to make it sound adventurous and totally normal.
" A sailor,...and he is sailing around the sea in his boat. And you want me to be fine with that."
" Well, I'm not fine with that Carolina, and you will not go off anywhere with this man. Do you understand what I'm saying. I will be there as soon as I can get away, and you will come home with me, got it?" He yelled into the phone.
" No dad, don't come. I won't be here when you come. I am going to go with Efe. Trust me, please trust me."...She replied, standing her ground for the first time.....
