Country Hearts, Chap 1
Lainey sat on her bed, staring at her great-grandmother's picture and read the caption for the millionth time.
'Phoebe "Annie" Mosey, First Place, Shooting Champion: Youngest Ever, 15.' Man, Lainey had a lot to live up to.
She got up from her bed and checked her phone. It read 8:53 AM. Below the time, the date: February 3, 2009. Exactly a week until her birthday, and 4 days until her big 3-week trip. She has been wanting to go on a "state voyage" type trip in her home state since she was 6. They were going to go to Pigeon Forge in Sevierville for a week, to Nashville for a week, and to the outskirts of Knoxville where her rich great-aunt lives. She, her parents, and her little brother would stay for 5 days there, then head home to Cleveland. As Lainey was just getting deep in thought about what she'd do during the trip, her mom yelled. "Lainey, Liam!! Breakfast is ready! Get down here and set the table!" Instinctively Lainey replied, "Coming!" and rushed downstairs. Her brother, however, replied very differently. "Moooom! Why me? Why not Lai?!" Lainey had already made it down and was reaching for the silverware drawer but her dad stopped her. "Ai- no, Lainey. Go sit down. Liam can do it." He looked away from Lainey and towards the staircase. "LIAM! Nowww." Lainey shivered. Even though he wasn't even talking to her, that angry voice of her father sent chills down her spine. She knew what her father was capable of. She immediately went and sat down as Liam rushed down the stairs, eyes wide. "Get us all silverware, son. And bring me and your sisters' plates. Then get your mothers and your own." "Yes, sir." Liam said respectively. He did as told then they all sat down and their mother said Grace. Then their mother said chilling words. "Lainey...we need to talk." Their mother bit the inside of her lip fretfully, something she did when she was hesitant to do something or anxious. Lainey hoped for the best but braced for the worst. "What could this be?" She thought.
