Third Person's POV

It's been six years since he last saw Taehyung, almost to the day, and Jungkook's been fine for probably just six months less than that, maybe a year if he's being less generous with himself. He's been fine, happy even, and he's built himself this place where he can live a good life, the kind he's always dreamed of, brick by brick, day by day. And he's honestly, truly felt like it'd turn out okay, to keep looking forward instead of back at things that he left at almost, at I wish, at maybe.

Like it'd be okay to stop carrying all that regret and start looking for new things to hope for but there wasn't a day where Jungkook didn't think of him, wondering how he would be doing, was he okay, was he eating well, the thoughts just went on and on and on. After all one can't have control over the thoughts.

How pathetic, he thinks as he slips out to the balcony to find a little space until his nerves begin to settle back down again. Six years, he thinks, and where has it gotten him except right back where he started?

As Jungkook sits down on the balcony, leaning back against the cool glass door, he pours himself a generous cup of the rum he absently grabbed and takes a sip, and then sighs and looks down at the bottle.

Today was the rehearsal dinner for Namjoon and Jin's wedding. It's coming so close, the wedding is tomorrow and Jungkook's thoughts wander back to Taehyung. He wonders if- if Taehyung will leave after the wedding, or would he be staying a couple weeks more?

It's a warm night, and Jungkook's always liked the view from a balcony, so much brighter and expansive than the scene out the window of his own apartment. The entire city is spread out below him, dotted with points of light from windows and billboards and bright neon signs like a sea of multicoloured stars. It makes him feel small in the way that lying out in their backyard to watch meteor showers as a kid made him feel small, like the world is a limitless place, like anything's possible. It makes him feel like it doesn't matter that sinkholes continue appearing in front of him, like the way to jump over them is out there, somewhere.

There's a memory, Jungkook knows, tucked somewhere deep in his subconscious that he doesn't like to think about, this landmine of a thing that he's kept burying, like if he just shovels enough dirt over it, it'll finally disappear forever. It's this memory of spring at Jimin, on a warm night just like this, the first night of the rest of Jungkook's life.

It had been after hours and campus had been nearly deserted, everyone long since gone following their high-school graduation ceremony, no one to catch the lot of them in his year and their mildly illegal bonfire. Jungkook remembers how Jimin had talked him into helping sneak beer onto campus, because it was their last night at the dorms after all. Who cares about the consequences anymore? he'd said. It's not like they'd be coming back any time soon.
